Good stuff, as usual. You're one of the very few who use a drone, which enhances the experience especially if there are two trains passing. As for high hoods, never liked riding the lead engine when one was part of the lash up. The field of vision was definitely impaired.

Now I can see the railroad running parallel to a freeway with trucks running much faster than the train. It's probably a miracle that the railroad doesn't go bankrupt and actually gets some love.

When was this filmed? I know west of defiance the tracks look so much better than this now. And every week when I passed by from indiana past defiance I saw the track crews working on it
@arkie742 жыл бұрын
yeah, this is a few years ago. the nd&w is waaay better now. this is back when they had to "walk" the trains through from point a to b. lol
@arkie742 жыл бұрын
its telling how bad the track is, when you see the "dings" on the bottom of the locomotive pilot. I saw somewhere they showed the date on one of the compromised size pieces of track they took out that was stamped 1914!

@paulbergen91142 жыл бұрын
What a way to be remembered in Shortline railroading due to exceptionally bad track. It almost has to be agonizing chasing it when it's this slow. In the first scene you swear the engine keeps leaning and looks like it's going to tip. The Drone shots over the elevators and the farm were great and looked like a small layout and while they replaced quite a few ties it was just to stabilize the road bed in an effort to probably make five mph. Does the GP ever get above run 3?? ?
@arkie742 жыл бұрын
...maybe when they are warming it up lol!
@cdavid81392 жыл бұрын
LOL. Chasing it? Try running it. Or try picking up crews. It is boring beyond belief and the rocking tends to want to put you to sleep.
@jerrysgardentractorsengine2243 Жыл бұрын
I’m not an expect on track maintenance, but I’m pretty sure railbed/tie stabilization comes before rail replacement. Regardless, it should be considered nothing short of a miracle that this line survived for as long as it did with such bad track

Ever since the first video this railroad fascinates me; I honestly don't know why they don't rebuild the road bed with concrete ties and spring clips? Also, try to improve the railroad from 30 M.P.H. to maybe 35 M.P.H.?
@ScottTaipaleRail Жыл бұрын
Not many railroads east of the Mississippi use concrete ties
@Joe-d7m6k10 ай бұрын
Concrete ties have been known to crack.
@cdavid81394 ай бұрын
I can easily tell you why. Such a rehab would cost around $1 million per mile. There isn't enough industry on the line to justify such an expenditure. And a gain in speed from 30 to 35 basically brings nothing to the bottom line

They made a lot of improvements under Pioneer. It remains to be seen if Patriot will sustain that momentum.

Patriot operates each line as a separate entity (though sharing overhead costs). This line has to make it on its own revenue.
