Special Thanks:
Very big thanks to Heart Under Blade for allowing me to use footage from this incredibly poignant video:
• The Scale of the Unive...
It's a Space Engine video set to the droning tones of Spiritualized! Check it out and as well as HUB's other content too!
Episode Notes:
Oh god. Prey. Dope ass game. Def my number one of 2017. Great lore, sublime gameplay, incredible location. Yes, I'll admit it's got issues (it takes FOREVER to get your first Typhon ability and the military operator bonanza at the end of the game is a major drag), but for everything it does meh, it does a hundred things ace!
This video covers the real world history, as well as the alternate history of Prey. I also go over the creation of the Talos 1, which I know Arkane officially covered in their "History of TranStar" video, but since that had more than a few inconsistencies, I figured this would serve fans better. Hope you enjoy.
Patreon Stuff:
A big thanks to all of my patreon subs, who have helped in making this possible. As a token of my gratitude, they are granted early access to my videos, and have the ability to vote on what game I cover next. To those who are interested, and would like to donate, feel free to visit:
www.patreon.com/user?u=4106047
Your donations go a long way, even if it's just a dollar. If enough people give, I might be able to do this full time and get some serious production value in these movies.
A Declaration:
Welcome to the Gameological Dig, a channel devoted to playing games with obtuse and interesting stories. The aim of this channel is to treat these game worlds like an archeological site, meant to be unearthed and studied, so that we may better understand their plots, characters and themes.
Game Notes:
Prey is a first-person shooter video game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game was released worldwide on 5 May 2017, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
In Prey, the player controls Morgan Yu while exploring the space station Talos I, in orbit around Earth-Moon L2, where research into a hostile alien collective called the Typhon is performed. As the Typhon escape confinement, the player uses a variety of weapons and abilities derived from the Typhon to avoid being killed by the aliens while looking to escape the station. The player gains access to areas of the station through a Metroidvania-style of progression by acquiring key items and abilities, eventually allowing the player to fully explore the station in an open world setting.
Arkane's Prey is largely unrelated to the 2006 game Prey developed by Human Head Studios, and is considered a reimagining of the intellectual property set in a wholly new narrative. While Prey 2, a sequel to the 2006 game, had been planned by Human Head, it fell into development hell following transfer of the intellectual property from 3D Realms to Bethesda Softworks, and was eventually cancelled in 2014. Arkane's game does not use any of the planned sequel's assets, and only incorporates the previous game's name and the broad theme of the protagonist being hunted by aliens. Arkane built Prey as a spiritual sequel to System Shock, providing the player with several potential means of progressing within the game.

I was really hoping that you'd do a video for Prey since I recently completed it, and naturally you did not disappoint. I liked your take on the Fermi's Paradox and how you associated the the mysterious nature of the Typhon with the reason we've yet to discover intelligent alien life in our universe. The Typhon reminds me of the the Alien from the original Alien movie and the cellular-replicating alien species of the Thing. Non-terrestrial beings whose nature and motives are the definition of the word alien. However, Arkane Studios took the idea of a truly alien species to a different level with the Typhon. The possibility that the Typhon don't even come from our universe or dimension as hypothesized by the mimic's ability to take the form of an inanimate object is a great expansion of cosmological horror. To further the argument against the Fermi's Paradox is the possible inability to communicate with intelligent life as made inherent with the Prey character statements and audiologs, and certainly the endgame revelation. Once again, thanks for the top quality content. You're one of the few KZbin channels out there that goes beyond LPs and reviews, and gives us something that allows us to admire these games even more and the developers that put so much effort into their games. I'll do what I can to spread the word about your channel, because your content is too good to be so unknown.

The entire world of Prey is a great example of the Dark Forest theory of extraterrestrial life. The idea that there is life everywhere, a forest full of hunters. Only when a child is dumb enough to wander into a clearing and light a fire to keep the chill from their bones is when the other hunters are able to strike.

Ok. I had a thought after watching the Mooncrash DLC. Pytheas and Talos expirianced the Typhon outbreaks relatively closely if it comes to time (at least it seems like it). My theory is that Typhons work more or less like Tyranids from Warhammer 40K- they need a synapse creature to coordinate. My theory is that Apex, this giant creature that arrives in Prey's endgame, is the synapse creature of Typhons and the closer it was to the Solar system the more coordinated Typhons on Talos and Pytheas became. If by any coincidence Typhons work more similarly to Tyranids- it means that there is essentially a Typhon Hive Fleet of sorts, somewhere, and so far it only sent it's tendril towards Earth once the evolved monke russled the bait Addendum- I feel less mad about the next theorizing since I seen others think about that too. What if Typhon aren't aliens in just space sense? What if they are extradimensional? Their mimicry ability has been confirmed as a form of dimension manipulation, not just molecular one. The theory goes that the Typhon arrived here or are arriving here from some paralel dimension, mostly connected to here via their mimicry ability- putting objects from other realities here and connecting to them, passing through only when a prey is availible. This would also mean that Fermi's Paradox brought in this vid isn't just caused by space real estate- but also a dimensional real estate.

Fuuuuuuuck I really love this game. Bless you for making this, I love hearing your perspectives and your detailed analysis of the events of I dunno, every game you cover. Fun fact: I live in Dallas, TX and I have been at that grassy knoll/in the building (WHICH ONE IS IT???) where JFK was shot. There are markers on the concrete on the street where each shot hit him. It's pretty surreal to see.

@KarinTheDragon
@KarinTheDragon 6 жыл бұрын
So, there are a crapton of conspiracy theories around who shot JFK/where he got shot from. The official story (which is the most realistic one, so I'm down with that being the case) is that Lee Harvey Oswald shot him from inside a building that was a hundred yards or so from where JFK's car was driving. There's a museum in that building and you can go stand in that spot where he was supposed to have taken the shots. With a rifle I would expect someone could make those shots, so, pretty realistic in my mind. The most widely spread conspiracy theory is that someone shot him from the "grassy knoll," and that someone other than Lee Harvey Oswald shot him. I've also stood on that grassy knoll, and while it's closer and at ground level, the Zapruder film + the ballistics make it pretty clear that the shots couldn't have been made from there. My college US history teacher had a field day talking about all the conspiracy theories.

What are your thoughts on the Nightmare? *Spoilers* I may have overlooked an important detail since it's been a few months since I've played it but I'm thinking it's possibly unique to our character because of us actually being a Typhon and it's more like our subconscious mind triggering and trying to snap us out of the simulation and the only reason the real Alex and Operators know of it is because they've seen it in earlier simulations (assuming this isn't their first one or that this isn't our first iteration that was reset by a failure, such as leaving the station in the escape pod canonically results as a redo) that weren't giving adequate results. Even the way we get rid of it, by sending out a certain frequency(which could be used to either break whatever frequency the Hive-like mind sends out or to purposely bring it about) supports this I think and they implemented it in a way so that it wouldn't seem out of place to the subject(us) undergoing the experiment when you inevitably come across it which Alex knows is going to happen so it would just seem as if it's there just like all the other Typhon. Imo it is the only Typhon that's out of place in the game and is completely unique because it always knows where you are and comes when you increase your Typhon levels which could be reinforcing your mind, subconsciously. Basically I'm thinking it's like a subconscious defense mechanism that's being triggered by a frequency that's possibly coming from the Hive mind(that we can cancel out or replicate when calling for it or sending it away). I'm not too great at explaining it but hopefully you see where I'm coming from with this, I really don't believe it's part of the simulation, it's more like the simulation is attempting to explain it away in order to keep up the illusion.

(2 years late SRY) Yeah that hypothesis makes a lot of sense, I agree 100% --especially considering how the Nightmare literally pops out of thin air when you "deter" it, like when other Typhon vanish/teleport they leave faint black smoke behind in their wake -- and the Nightmare doesn't, it just vanishes in a second and thus flickers out of "existance". The satellite you use to attract or deter it, the in-game comments of characters when it appears (i.e. Mikhaila Ilyushin says, "Morgan, did you cause that?!"), and even "Morgan's" vague codex/research entry on the thing (can't recall it exactly, just writing this comment off the top of my head), could very well be all parts of a hastily slapped-in effort by Alex Yu and his colleagues to make it seem to "Morgan Yu"/the Test Subject Typhon that this "Nightmare" is just another Typhon aboard Talos 1 -- and to make the simulation of it all seem "real" to their Test Subject. There's also this voice you hear in important parts of the game. Like when you come into contact with the Coral for the first time, (outside the simulation) the Typhon Test Subject goes "into shock" (as heard briefly by one of Alex's colleagues in the short cutscene that plays), and (inside the simulation) hears none other than "Morgan Yu's" voice telling them "Don't let them do this to you." I believe this voice, along with the Nightmare, are the Test Subject's Typhon instincts screaming at them, "Wake up, this reality isn't real, kill them". I also think the Test Subject is sort-of a half-Typhon, half-Human hybrid what with the Test Subject possibly thinking that they're Morgan in the simulation, and outside the simulation possibly having Human attributes such as empathy, or even curiosity (as those attributes were installed in them by Alex Yu and his Operator colleagues, possibly like how Alien Neuromods -- literal peices/attributes of the Typhon alien organisms -- are installed in Human beings in the universe of Prey (2017)...). Idk that's just what I think. Thanks for reading this rambling response of mine! Prey's lore is so interesting. This is all just a theory of mine, can't be sure it's legit. It's just what I gather from playing Prey (2017). :D
@WhiskeyTango76s
@WhiskeyTango76s 3 жыл бұрын
ManaCaster427 Haha no problem, I'm glad someone finally gave some feedback to it. It's been a long time since I played, probably around the time I wrote this actually, but I think you're probably on to something. While reading it I started to remember the "Pro-human" Ending(or my imagination), doesn't the Test Subject Typhon take atleast a partial human form when it shakes Alex's hand? I only say partial because all we can see is it's hand(but I'm assuming it doesn't end there). If so then I think that should be considered significant, if I remember right, we never any any Typhon take any complex organic forms, they're always objects with the most advanced being us taking the form of mechanical objects so if this isn't purely from my imagination I think that also supports your theory. You'd think Alex would put a Human mimicking Typhon in the simulation if he knew that's something they can do as it would be an amazing way to gauge the Test Subject Typhon's mind by putting in a unique scenario that's a little closer to home so it makes me think what we see at the end is entirely new and could likely be caused by what you suggested rather than it just mimicking Alex's arm through touch(which if I remember right isn't how that works anyways).

ManaCaster427 Haha np, I get the same way when there's a game I enjoy that was thought out enough to make it worth pondering.. Like, even though I really don't like some of the changes made to it, I've been bouncing off ideas(mostly off of myself) regarding the FFVII Remake for months now and still get excited when something new clicks which happens almost every time I play it(I can't help it with this one, I've waited for this since the PS2 came out). I completely agree with the Subject being a Hybrid and I think Alex all but spells it out for us at the end with the "We spent years putting what you can do into us. We never thought to put what we can do into you. Until now." You mention it having a humanoid form while still strapped to the chair despite it still being inky, that's something I remember finding interesting because it's literally in the shape of a human, or atleast it's hand/arm is but I haven't examined the other Phantoms closely enough to see if they also have literal hands with all 10 fingers so I'm not sure if it's unique to the Subject. My only problem with this scene is the fact that if you look down in that scene you can see the Subject appears to be wearing boots...for some reason..while in its Phantom form which kinda makes me wonder about some of the details in that scene though I think that was likely something they simply overlooked in an otherwise extremely detailed game. I didn't know that about the name, I always assumed it was referring to the monster birthed by the Titan Gaea that was said to have a hundred Dragons' heads which fits the big bastard that pops up near the end if I remember right(sorry, I can't remember it's name, it's been a while lol) though what you came up with also fits. Hopefully this game will get a sequel, I sometimes get the urge to replay it because it really is pretty damn good(and I'd like to see how it looks now that I've finally got a 4K TV to support my Pro) but the ending really killed it's replay value for me. I wish that the NG+ had a way to where you could embrace being a Typhon, it'd be pretty damn awesome to run around playing as a Phantom, I love those effects.
@aevvah_flxwer8550
@aevvah_flxwer8550 3 жыл бұрын
@@WhiskeyTango76s About the ending scene with us being a Typhon-Human hybrid, the Subject's "body" seemed to have taken on Morgan's shape exactly -- because it thought it was Morgan/OG Morgan is a part of them with it having Morgan's cells and memories implanted -- hence why the Subject appears to be "wearing" boots and whatnot (idk, that's just how I interpret it as we don't really get a good view of it's "body" in the chair). And I was mistaken about the Typhons' name! 'Typhon' is actually the name of the father of all monsters in Greek mythology, and fought with Zeus over the control of the Universe. Very fitting. I think the name of that monster you mentioned (which I also forgot, and is one of my favorites in Greek mythology) would also fit very well for the Subject, as it could've been one of many versions of itself that "failed" the test. Just one of many failed experiments that (probably) "succeeded". I would also love to play as a Typhon -- Gods forbid NOT in a half-assed cash-grab multiplayer mode -- and really embrace the alien side of "Morgan Yu"...I love the Psi Powers, they're so Godsdamn gr8! XD That kind of option, especially in a New Game+ would be just awesome. Maybe the story would change as well, who knows? As for the FFVII Remake (am from the wrong generation, but my older brother hands-down loved the original as s kid), I don't think it's a Remake because of all the obvious changes. I'm not a fan of them either (was hoping for a nuFFVII, however tragic Aeris/th's death would be in HD). But it looks like a great game regardless. I hope it turns out to be great. (Even though I'm a petty Xbox player... -_- )

What Stanners said. It’s got some stuff on TranStar that - while revealed early in the game - might spoil some minor plot points.

Now that I think about it Prey has more in common with the Alien/Prometheus universe than Bioshock even though it is a spiritual successor in some ways

The 'dimensional shifting' is just a hypothesis. It's never determined for certain how the Mimics actually change their shape. In your video you seem to treat this as the definite answer.

Hai. Sorry for posting it under this video not under Penumbra, but will you look into lore of Amnesia? I mean The Darl Deacent and Rebirth... Machine for Pigs is a bastard child and a detour that should not be mentioned.

The video is brilliant as always, but you went a little overboard with the Great purge numbers. Official reports of 1951 form within USSR estimate ~1 400 000 people repressed (throughout 1936-1938) with half of them being sentenced to death. In no way I defend or condone such inhumane actions, but even if we triple this number we are still nowhere near "tens of millions".

Would you do a little Lore Series on Horizon Zero Dawn?
@WhiskeyTango76s
@WhiskeyTango76s 6 жыл бұрын
I actually think that'd be pretty good, it's got a pretty big backstory all contained in one game. I just hate that the game was so good with story telling that you learn basically everything through just the main quest

I can see how some may not have clicked if people missed out on any vantage points(I thought those were excellent, I loved how they didn't just show an image but gave a first hand account of it with voice acting) or the little relics you find in the areas adds alot of flavor to the lore. It's bad when my only real complaint with the game is actually a pro that adds alot of games have problems doing, it made it where I didn't feel the need to replay it again because it did such a great job presenting it's story. I'm regretting that I traded it not long after beating it now that it has some DLC that I heard is pretty damn good.

Another vote for Horizon! There's a lot of lore in there that's not completely visible. All the data points, audio logs, holograms, and vantage points tell a lot of the story that's easily missable. I've played if through twice, and still haven't found all the data points.

Female Morgan is the best Morgan And you're taking just ONE of their THREE theories on how mimics work and repeating it like its fact. I don't think that was ever verified >.> they just know it's one of those 3. Although in one email, someone said they thought it was magic. I agree with that one.
