Sakuraba was treated like shit getting thrown in with heavyweights guys on steroids that wouldn't be allowed in America... by the end of his career his body was ruined with injuries he went into fights wrapped up like a mummy and had to fight killers double his size took shots to the heas that he shouldn't have if he was fighting guys his own size he was one of the best ever but they put him in against guys like cro cop who was knocking out heavyweights and sakuraba half his size had to fight him this shouldn't have been allowed

He beat rampage,randleman,vitor belfort, Carlos newton and other high level guys of his era while being a heavy smoker,drinker and while having bad knees for his entire career. He deserves to be considered a goat for the era he fought in and who he fought during that time.

Sakuraba was 5'9 176, but routinely fought and a lot of the time successfully out grappled opponents 6+ 220+ lbs. Could you imagine Conor or most light / welter weights from the current era pulling off anything nearly as impressive? As another commenter said, Conor can't even take down guys his own size, let along 50+ lbs heavier.

Fighting somebody bigger than you, and losing most of the time and winning some of the time doesn’t really make you a GOAT. And don’t try to riddle us with excuses, smoking heavy and drinking heavy was his own fault. And that’s probably one of the reasons why he lost so much. Bad knees? Tough luck. Shogun got his arm broken and went on to win 4 fights after. Mighty Mouse broke his leg against Miguel and went on to win a unanimous decision. Hell, even Cro Cop had his ACL broken and still went on to win 18 of his next 26 fights. Sure, he wasn’t the same fighter but he still did pretty damn good. Sakuraba was a great fighter, but if he won against bigger guys most of the time, NOT some of the time. Then he’d be my GOAT. But that’s not reality.

Sakuraba was a good fighter but... yeah, PRIDE tried to do the "giant killer" gimmick with him one too many times. Sakuraba at that time was probably around 180, give or take five pounds. Many have said that if he had optimal training and diet, he would belong in the welterweight class. Instead he just kept fighting guys bigger and heavier than him. How good was he exactly? We'll never know, because the other user has a point about PRIDE's backstage shenanigans.

Just because A is True, does not mean B is False. Combat sports have always had these kinds of problems. Back in those old days, I read interviews from guys like Rampage Jackson who would detail some of the ways PRIDE tried to sway certain outcomes of fights. Fedor Emilianenko said that the PRIDE people were giving him fake smiles after he beat Cro Cop. PRIDE itself went out of business and bought by the UFC after scandals with yakuza. So we cannot know for sure, but it is possible some fights were not on the level.

This was before every mma athlete did heavy cross-training. Just as accurate to say that Mirko was only good in the standup. Also, as Kakeustel notes, the size disparity was huge. Saku routinely fought men 20+ pounds heavier than him because there was no division for his size.
