Let's take a look at it on another level. Spear lost his family, in this episode fang was getting messed but pretty bad, he couldn't lose anyone else. Yes spear was transformed by other means. A source that amplified his strength but seemingly also enchanced his courage to protect those he cared about, fang was his parter at this point. He already had the fury, but enhanced....the apes stood no chance....champion or not.
