The Japanese government has already announced numerous times that masks are okay to come off in Japan. It's just gonna depend on whether or not the Japanese person in question wants to take it off in fear of looking bad in front of others. Tokyo was way quicker to take their masks off. At work, my supervisor removed his mask as soon as the Tokyo governor announced it was okay. Also, everything is just a trend in Japan. Even Naruto is old news over there at this point while it's still hyper popular in the states. One fear that many people over there have is whether or not they're the same age, so they can talk about the same fads from their respective childhood etc

Super insightful, thank you. Especially with my upcoming trip it’s super interesting to hear where the two countries are similar and where they are different.

@BossMonsterKaiju luckily if you're not either Japanese or very fluent in Japanese, there won't be any un spoken expectations for you, which is a fantastic thing indeed. You can just go and take in as much of the culture as you can. Should be an amazing experience regardless of what you decide to do. Simply going around your hotel and experiencing the streets, walking into a convenience store and grabbing a beer while staring at the sky scrapers around Tamachi, Tokyo station etc can be one of the greatest experiences ever (walking and drinking is perfectly legal in Japan)
