Not true. Macron is the most fluent English speaker of all the French presidents - he has given speeches and interviews in English . Jacques Chirac and Giscard d'Estaing were fairly good but heavily accented. Holland, Mitterrand and Sarkozy were so-so.

Perhaps Mr Starmer would explain to us all why, when we have a Foreign Office (FCDO) packed with highly-skilled diplomats and a parliament stuffed with elected MPs, he is choosing to send Morgan McSweeney out to meet with the French, the Americans and probably others. McSweeney is unelected and, reportedly, lacks foreign affairs experience and so why is Mr Starmer quite probably short-circuiting the Foreign Office and Parliament? Will records of those apparently 'behind-closed-doors' meetings McSweeney has had with the French and Americans ever be released or is Mr Starmer operating a clandestine quasi-governmental Downing Street cabal outside and beyond the reach of the elected UK government? Does Mr Starmer not trust his diplomats and elected officials? What is the point of having highly-paid, highly-skilled, highly-experienced diplomats (who speak French!) and hugely-expensive elected MPs if Mr Starmer chooses not to allow them to do the jobs they are handsomely paid for? Is McSweeney Mr Starmer's version of Trump junior and have we now got an untrustworthy two-tier government operation in place?
