is it harder to factor composites, since their are more factors at play?

No, it becomes easier. If you get a factor of that number, you will divide the number by its factor, starting from 2 onwards till it's square root, and then you will find factors of the quotient. As the quotient is smaller than the number, you will have to do less hectic trial divisions.
