I have the same smoker and I have had 3 bad runaway grease fires. Flames 2-3 feet in the air. I didn't have anything to smother the flames and water is a no no. The first time the grill auto shut down as i wasn't watching the grill. All the times I quickly removed the protein I was cooking, opened the lid and let it burn off. Keeping the lid closed could damage the smoker. I now replace the throw away grease tray EVERY TIME. I also now have a fire blanket. Those grills require a lot of maintenance with clean dry pellets, constantly replacing the grease tray and cleaning out the burner.

Buy a 22" Weber Smokey Mountain with wood chunks and some as a starter. I will be better than any pellet smoker if you're not willing to go to a offset. Even a good drum smoker is a option.
