That's because the vast majority of modern wingers were never really trained to play on the side of their strong foot. Which is why they're not that great at crossing and overall wing-play. The likes of Ronaldo, Di Maria, Robben, Ribery, and Bale all started playing on the side of their strong foot before switching to the other side.

During this first spell at United he was mainly a right-winger (the left-winger was generally Giggs). Which allowed him to master traditional winger functions that he still was able to use when he switched to the left due to his excellent left foot. But most wingers these days are only trained to cut inside, with the full-back always being the one providing width and crosses.

You'll never see Messi take the ball end to end, nor have seen him freeze players as a winger like Ronaldo would. And you will never see Messi do this against top squads of back fours, because La Liga rarely had anything but soft play. Players always went to La Liga to have an easier work rate, except athletes like CR7 who earned every strike. Huge difference in play between Barca and 5 talented triangle pass players, and the open play of dynamic football. Only one would survive in the EPL. Rarely, (and Arsenal is a testament to this and them always hurting at the end of the season for wins,) will you see Barca-like play in other leagues.
