@miles-thesleeper-monroe84662 жыл бұрын
Another test could have been a wet tile. A dry tile will suck the moisture out of the bed resulting in badly cured mortar at the interface. This is one of the primary reasons for priming. Essentially this is a rigid form of pavement construction where the base bed and surface are required to act together to resist deformation so the integrity of the bond is critical. As is the need to have a sealed impermeable joint between units. As opposed to flags or blocks which are flexible pavements which can tolerate movement and moisture. In high load public environments the only difference is that the paver will be thicker and a full concrete slab is added over the sub-base to guarantee rigidity. Great test tho. Looking at cost, marshalls is extortionately expensive kidology whereas a gallon of pva will cost 5 quid and is just as effective.
@tidybrickslandscaping2 жыл бұрын
If you used the sbr you would still have to add cement and make a paste for that extra stickiness. Sbr mix drys really fast unlike the Marshalls primmer lasts all day 👍🏴
@scoyle17503 жыл бұрын
Always use sbr it's also great on its own when you are using a light coloured slab also would only use sbr for outside as pva only suitable for inside work as it can repell weather for a while but its actually not waterproof and only suitable in certain applications

PVA will dry and then rehydrate when wet so it can be the weak link. for this reason you would have to use waterproof PVA. But PVA is a plastic so the SBR is better as a product as its a rubber that does not rehydrate or degrade.

Can’t really give a ratio apart from what’s workable at the time. As long as it’s paste able it’s good. You can buy a primer made especially for it also 👍🏴
@richwallwin3 жыл бұрын
Great test just shows how well the stuff works, I started out mixing my own sbr then just moved onto the premixed stuff, yes it costs abit more but it actually saves money in the long run as you can knock up a lot and not waste time having to do small mixes of sbr slurry every 10 slabs when you could be knocking out loads in one go.
@tidybrickslandscaping3 жыл бұрын
You hit the nail on my head my friend 👍🏴
@bernardfender51473 жыл бұрын
Excellent results, just as expected. I'll guess the Marshall stuff is cement based with a powdered acrylic (basically powdered modern version of SBR) and retarder for all day use. Even using the Marshall I would recommend putting SBR in the mortar
@tidybrickslandscaping3 жыл бұрын
I’m glad I did that video it and so many questions I had myself and the marshals primer is my favourite because of the retardant. I always use a squirt of fairy liquid for my mixes and have been for over 30 years and it’s all still standing 👍🏴
@bernardfender51473 жыл бұрын
@@tidybrickslandscaping honestly, one of the worst things you can do is add detergent to mortar!! The reason for this is the size of the air bubbles in the cement paste. Fairy will make a beautiful fluffy mortar but the air is entrapped not entrained meaning there are fewer, bigger bubbles. Ultimately this reduces strength, freeze/thaw resistance and durability. If you can, just add a splash of plasticiser instead it doesn't take any longer than adding washing up liquid!!, (but SBR is still the best). 😁😁. Stay safe my friend 🙂

Obviously not a good time of year to do a patio because of the temperatures but the cement mix would be 4\1 sharp sand mix with a slurry primer and there’s many type of this I normally use the Marshall’s primer or ultra scape for my tiles It might be best for the customer to wait a while or tiles could pop up with the frost 👍🏴

Can I make a slurry by mixing just cement and water? Will it stick porcelain floor tiles?
@tidybrickslandscaping2 жыл бұрын
You could but a better idea to mix sbr with it as it’s a liquid glue double sticking power 👍🏴

What’s the ratio of the mixture if using sbr? Thanks
@tidybrickslandscaping3 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t really say just put some in the bucket mix of cement and as long as it’s like a slurry amd not too dry then it should work 👍🏴

Please can I ask what you would lay these on is it hardocore or a concrete bed
@tidybrickslandscaping3 жыл бұрын
Here in the UK we use a hard-core base you could use concrete as well no problem it’s only foot traffic. But this job had 250 mm hard-core and 150 to 200 mm concrete 👍🏴

does it need to be applied wet to adhere best? Ive painted in on stone before cementing but let it dry first?
