@Tyler Neal Jason will give you the best answer but I believe you can still use the ceramic but it depends on how you set it up. I have the different mechanical media horizontal instead of vertical so at te very top you can put on the ceramic as long as is under water. I choose this way because vertically it didn't allow the biowheels to spin. Hope Jason can give you the best advice. And yes its always good to have a back up. I do have a second 375 just in case.

I have used Marineland filters since I started in this hobby back in 1996. Over the years I have used different versions of this filter. I remember a version of it where they had a flow control lever which sat directly above the impeller housing, and it was purple in color. I currently have a 75-gallon planted tank and I run the Emperor-400 on it. The filter is 19 years old, and it runs great just like it did when I first bought it. I have always liked how big the individual compartments for media are. I don't run it with the provided gray inserts for media as that is such a waste of space. I use a couple of bio rings at the bottom to break up the flow of water and help separate the gunk in the water column which is then picked up by the sponges. Above them I put a combination of Fluvals' Biomax rings with lava rock and above that I run some polyfill / filter floss and my water stays crystal clear. I have found this way I maximize the space provided in every pocket and can run a substantial of amount and bio-media within the filter. I absolutely love the Penguin's and think they are the absolute best filters for hang on the back.

It’s amazing , how many folks have problems with the bio wheels, I’ve had one running for decades and the wheels spin very fast, the small channels might need a slight cleaning with a toothpick and paper towel, but for mine I love those wheels and I believe in they’re use. I wish they would put the hinged top on the regular prnguins, but not a big deal. Thanks for another great show🙂

Greetings from Michigan. Thanks for the review. I already have the aquaclear 110 .....2 on my 90 and 150 each. Crystal clear water. You are correct on when they get shut off I have to take a cup of water and pour it into the filter compartment to get the flow going but it is not a inconvenience for me. I don’t even use carbon. The nice thick sponge in my aquaclear does an amazing job in keeping my tank crystal clear. This is another great day with Prime Time Aquatics!✋🐠

Nice review. Some additional notes , the power cord can be pinched between the filter bracket and tank rim. There is no dedicated cord holder. The spray bar utilizes unfiltered water unless you use a intake sponge. The intake sponge from marine land works great and will extend the life of the cartridges . Was playing with the idea of removing the bio wheels and adding marinepure bio balls in the area. But never had an issue with the wheels not spinning. The media basket is also hit with unfiltered water so you do have to remove and clean it. Back in the 80s an aftermarket company sold top fill media baskets instead of the clam shell design. This makes a huge difference on holding capacity. The filter is quiet and does a nice job cleaning the tank. Years ago the 400 came with clear windows to see if the wheels were spinning . This filter for the price should have that feature. The intake tube also had a top skimmer feature. It’s a big filter and you know it’s in the tank. But again it does a nice job. The cover issue, I removed 1/4 inch from the glass cover edges. They fit again now. I use this filter in a 65 gallon salt tank and thankfully the salt creep issues the 400 had are resolved with the 450. Especially the new internally contained spray bar design. All in all a nice job by marine land !!

I used to feel the same about the Emperor Filters. I had an Emperor 400 that ran for 25+ years flawlessly before it died about 1.5 years ago. Its direct replacement is cheaply built compared to the older one. It also started having impeller problems at about 9 months. I have done the "impeller fix" twice now in the last 6 months and am going to sell it. A once great filter is not so great anymore.

Thanks for the review Jason. It looks like marineland did a good job in addressing the issues of the previous version. Which I found great initially but over time was a pain. The greatest new advantage is the pump motor. That being said I replaced a smaller bio-wheel 200 with a SeaChem 55. My issues with the 200 was noise, initially it was quiet but then it got noisy. Some of that noise came from sand getting suced into the intake propeller. Cleaning helped but then I had trouble with the intake piping unless it was seated seat just right it would again be noisey. I also found the fit of the cover to be problematic. Now maybe I just got a got a bad unit. Still I've decided to move to the SeaChem line. The bio-wheel concept is good but in the previous version I found the intake plumbing to be over engineered and and not worth while. Hopefully this new pro-line will address the intake piping and seating issues. But for me it's SeaChem now.

If the wheel stops spinning at a decent speed you need to clean your filter. It means water is getting blocked by either a sponge needing cleaning or cartridges needing replacement. I have my 350 and 400 with original wheels 3 years old the wheels still spin with good speed.

Hi Jason great review, I have the 400 on my aquarium and love it, waiting for the 450 to be available here in Canada, the way I use it is I replace the carbon with course and medium sponges cut in the shape of the cartridge for fit and then I cut the fine sponge for polishing and put that in the grey basket and it works beautifully, my aquarium is a 220 gallon Discus with 2 FX6 and the 400, I run the FX with bio media for 4mths without changing and even then they remain fairly clean. I do water changes twice per week and just rinse the 400 sponges when I do these waters changes.

I moved it to my 60 g and it barely fit. The glass top is real snug against the housing. It caused a vibration. I used it for 4 months and took it off. Other than that it is a good filter. If they could redesign with a slimmer motor housing I would buy it.

As long as they are in there and water is flowing by them you should be ok. They don't move like you would see in a sump.

When you use the filter cartridges the blue goes to the back not the front. This prevents all the gunk from getting inside the filter with the carbon. I have plants in my tank and so I cut open the black area and dump the carbon out. This holds the filter floss in place and can be easily washed off. By having the biowheels you don't have to worry about killing your cycle when cleaning off the filter pads, just don't touch the biowheels. Also if your wheel stops spinning adjust the rotation of the spray bars to increase the speed of the wheel. This does not affect the speed of the filter just the speed of the wheel. Happy fish keeping y'all.

The bio wheels also provide excellent gas exchange. If you're running a planted tank you'll find you're plants do better overall with out running co2 on the tank. Clean the spindles on the bio wheel once a month or so and they'll turn for the life of the filter.
@milekh6681 Жыл бұрын
What’s the difference between the wheel or just using the spillway for “ gas exchange “
@samsimple6153 Жыл бұрын
@@milekh6681 a spillway creates turbulence on the water surface to promote gas exchange, and a wheel will also, but also suspends a thin film of water in the atmosphere that increases surface area considerably allowing a far greater gas exchange than can happen on the surface of the tank.

Maybe im wrong for never rinsing but im like u i dont like getting that junk in my tank so i leave them alone. Their great biological filtration so if u just leave them alone they work great. @PrimeTimeAquatics2 жыл бұрын
The issue is the internal motor placement, so it may still cause the lids to not fit flush. Yes, you can still clean the spray bar tubes!

I have been trying to get a couple of those for my 210g to replace the 350s I have now, but Amazon has been out of stock (everyone has been out of stock) since you did the unboxing a year or so ago.

Is it best to have a sponge filter as well as the Emp450? Or can I do without the sponge filter?

If it’s a longer tank (6ft) it might be helpful to have a sponge filter at the other end

Love my marineland 450, except the micron filter. How often do I change it?? It seems to get dirty very fast. Tried to clean it per the instructions, but it fell apart
@PrimeTimeAquatics3 жыл бұрын
If it clogs fast you could try using an intake sponge. I don't use it in my tanks because I'd probably have to change it out every other day based on my stocking levels.

In a way - you have to unplug and remove the motor housing. Sometimes, depending on the tank, you can remove it with the rest of the filter still attached to the tank.

the bio wheels better since it's going through the air all the time makes for much better more robust beneficial bacteria growth that's the purpose of it
@MrOgger1514 жыл бұрын
It is a wet dry filter which means way more oxygen which allows the the bacteria growth to accelerate responding to changes way faster. I think LOL.

I recently got a one of these and there is water flowing out of the middle part and not just the sides. It’s flowing over the motor part as well as from the side part where it is supposed to. Do I have a defective one or any idea?
