Hello Fellow Fish Keepers,
In this video we look at six different shell dwelling cichlids and talk about how to set up a tank for shell dwellers. Shell dwellers are awesome fish that stay relatively small, but still have big personality. Best of all, many of the shell dwelling species can be kept in smaller fish tanks.

Feisty isn't the word for it - terrors of the sea is more like it; while cleaning the gravel (and moving shells) today, I got bitten 37 times (yeah, i always count now) by my dominant male gold ocellatus. I even tried chasing him with my giant pentapus (my hand) and he wouldn't back down. Then he stares me down. Three ocellatus ( he killed three others), 50 shells, 40g breeder - no fry. I think I should set up a multi tank... Thanks for the great video - now excuse me while I go to the hospital to have my arm reattached.

I’m setting up a 115 gallon 30lx30wx26h cube tanganyika tank and I have 7 species that I’ve decided on. I’ve done quite a bit of research on them and I believe with how I’m going to set up the tank (lots and lots of caves and shells) that they’ll all get along pretty well and show off the natural behavior I want to see, but I’d like some more experienced opinions. Tell me know what you think: C. Leptomosa P. Nigiripinnis A. Calvus J. Transcriptus N. Brichardi N. Multifaciatus N. Leleupi N. Pulcher

I had a meleagris tank and I "loved" them ! I also had the multis and the brevis. Of all three shellies that I've kept, I like the meleagris best and the brevis least. The mels were the flashiest of the 3 and the multies were most interesting because you get so many of them...they make a nice colony. The brevis were the least active and not very interesting...to me anyway. I paid about 4-5$ each....maybe $8 for the meleagris…..which I guess was a pretty good price !

PH of Tanganyika is 9.4 to 9.7, so anything up to that is fine. Even as low as 7.2 is OK as long as it is constant. Of course they do much better in higher PH water (8+) and they like hard water. Best not to be using salts etc to boost hardness - just use what you have but keep it CONSTANT.

Late comment: If you could layer the tank (by having a cavern & a sanded plateau above it) would that make them happier or no? It would be more space for shells & more substrate to dig in, but the extra space would be elevated.

So decided to go with a shell dweller. What set up I’m going with. 10 gallon rodi water sand, escargot shells, floating plant 1-2 rock in the center. Species only tank. Advice on which she’ll dweller I’m assuming Multi? And how many? Advice in getting the correct parameters so far I’m planning on using a 3 chamber set up will be using filter floss for mechanical, ceramic biofilter, thinking of purigen for chemical filter. Heater thinking of using crush coral inside the chamber for hardness is that enough to reach the hardness and same with ph since I’m using ro/di. Also let me know if I’m missing anything else.

One way is to remove the shells with the fish inside to a bucket with dechlorinated water and maybe an airstone. Stack a bunch of rocks in the bucket and place a piece of egg crate over the rocks. Lay the shells on top of the eggs crate. Usually the fish will swim out of the shells and into the rocks after a while. Once you remove the rocks all you have are the fish!

I am looking to set up a tank in my office using a 29-gallon rimless (31" L / 13.5" W / 15.75" H) that I got on the cheap. I tested the water from the tap and it was really soft (89.5 GH, 1° KH) with a high pH (8.2-8.4). With the high pH, I thought a shell dweller tank would be best since I can up the hardness using the substrate (I am planning on a mix of cichlid sand mixed with aragonite sand) and not have to try and chase the pH. As for stocking, I am planning on going with Multis. Where I am looking for help is what to put in the tank with the Multis. From watching your videos I was thinking maybe some Brichari or Cyprichromis Leptosoma, but I am not sure I fully understand the species profiles. Since the tank is in my office, I am not focused on breeding these, but it could be cool to have some fry and juveniles in the tank. So, I guess my question is: If this was your tank, what would you do?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
The substrate choice is a good one. Other fish depend on whether or not you want the fish to breed. If you do a multi-only tank would be best. The other two do best in at least a 3ft tank and often fill up a tank quickly too, which can lead to territory issues.

@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 2 жыл бұрын
Females don't usually carry excessive amounts of eggs in their bellies so you could be dealing with an internal parasite. 20L will work well for most shell dwellers. I believe you have multis, which are easy to keep. I feed them Northfin flakes, but they eat just about everything. Good luck!

I've been considering shellies. I really want at least one cichlid in my new 25 gallon (I miss my convicts), but I also want a community tank. So it's hard making a decision. Plus I want kuhli loaches. The height is 24 inches, so there's lots of water column space, and the length is about 21 inches. Do you think a couple less-aggressive shellies would be okay with kuhli loaches and community fish (haven't decided what exactly... Might go back to basics with plays and mollies... I'd love to get danios again though... 🤷🏻‍♀️). I have 7.8 pH and 300ppm hardness. My biggest concern is that I'm trying a planted tank for the first time, so... Like, I remember my convict cichlids liked to re-scape the place, so shellies could be an issue. I don't know.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics My 55g planted cherry shrimp tank has custom buit in shrimp housing, imagine "bee hive" with 2inches circle that run 6inches deep per hole. That is built into the gravel on the back wall, stepping-layer bottom-up. If I remove the shrimp, just curious if the "Muti" will use it. I could always put 100 khuli loaches in it, to watch them poking out their heads. Est. 35holes or so "tube/caves"

@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 5 жыл бұрын
They will almost certainly breed, but they may be worth a lot too. Multis and Similus are both desirable fish that can be sold back to pet stores and probably pay for food and equipment for the tank?

As far as tanks/setup go, have you ever made tiers shelves in your shelly tanks? I have a 29g standard tank with Gold Ocellatus, which stays very close to the bottom outside of feeding time. I have six of them right now, and one is a total bully; he seems to tolerate 4 of them, including another male but keeps one of the females in the corner top of the tank. She doesn't seem to be able to establish a territory at all. I'm thinking of making some acrylic shelf with a lip to fill with sand and put some shells to give a little more vertical area to the tank. Have you ever seen anything like that? Looking at creating something like this www.etsy.com/listing/894839095/eco-level-aquarium-shelf-system-corner?ref=yr_purchases

@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
The only issue I see is shellies often like to dig a lot - my guess is in a short amount of time most of the sand would wind up on the lower level.
