Hi, I think what's most important when building a fishroom is if you can maintain it. Monthly costs can get you into trouble. That is something to consider carefully. Everyone can save up to buy a Porsche but maintaining it is often the tricky part. ( all costs considered). Great fishroom and awesome to see your dream has come true. Have a wonderfull 2019.

I can tell you're happy with your fish room and all the tanks you have upstairs, too. I was actually surprised it was all way less than $20 thousand (excluding fish, plants etc). I have a 29 gal and a 16 gal. Just the plants cost me at least $300 because if one didn't make it, I'd replace it with something else. The fish don't seem to be much of an expense at all, but they are my favorite part! You ought to know I got a real deal on my trumpet snails because they hitchhiked in on a plant or two. Anyone want to buy some? LOL Have a great day and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Somehow, I missed this post until today. As your father I do remember those wonderful trips to the fish store(s) along with your brother Matt. I guess I never knew the impact it had on you but am glad it did. Back then I believed as a parent you need to find enjoyable things you can do with and teach your children about. That turned out to be T-Ball/baseball, baseball card collecting, camping and the outdoors, a pet - cat(s) by your mother’s choice, a backyard swimming pool and the neighborhood gatherings of friends, and of course some fish tanks in various shapes and sizes. In the later, I found colorful beauty, tranquility in viewing (most tanks) and the amazing ability to watch them grow while in many cases changing colors. The added joy about this as a parent is the continued gratification of watching (from a distance intentionally) as you have gotten your family/boys not only involved in these activities but have superseded my involvement and knowledge by a remarkable distance. Very proud of you and your boys for developing positive family functions and values. In closing, as TM Aquatics mentioned, the overall expense is somewhat irrelevant because it could have been spent on a couple of exotic vacations which lasted only a few weeks. So, don't beat yourself up about it, enjoy!

I actually was suprised it was "so cheap". I actually love the look of your room, the stands look nice, the lids and lights are nice, etc. I use to do photography for a hobby, and now I do photo/video full time. I'm also a competitive long distance Rifle shooter. It's not uncommon for guys to show up with a $15,000 setup, the RV they bought to go to matches, not to mention match fees and ammo ($6-8 a shot, .50BMG), and they go to like 12 a year! Photography is the same, easy to drop $10,000 into stuff that'll fit in a backpack. I've found even my friends that dirbike, or restore cars, or whatever, spend a bit of cash to. I guess it depends on your income, so it may be easier to spend $11,000 for some vs others, but again, for your quality level of a fishroom, I am impressed!

Very good breakdown. For me the most important thing to do when you start building the fishroom is to make sure you are on the same page with the missus. The second most important thing is to ask yourself whether you will have the time to maintain the fishroom as Jason said in his previous video. The third most important thing is to plan carefully and meticulously. I have done a huge mistake of thinking that the floor of my 2nd floor apartment would hold the weight of 13000 pounds (6000kgs). I was dead wrong and had to dismantle to wooden racks again to install IPN180 beams to support the weight. Well done Jason and thanks for sharing this video with us! Thanks for sharing. I know when I had just one tank (125gal salt/reef setup) that it was pricey but an entire fish room WOW!!! One other thing that you might want to touch on would be the amount of time (approximately) one should consider investing each week taking care of for a fish room. Not to mention what do you do when you go on family vacations? Who takes care of the fish room? I really think I want to do eventually but will put more thought into the planning of all costs associated with to include backups and who I'd trust to babysit first. Nice video. Finally! A video about the REAL cost of a fish room. This (so called hobby I call it MY addiction) is very expensive once you get past your 3rd tank (I say this because once you get beyond your 3rd tank your thinking and buying bigger than 10 or 20 gallon tanks). MTS is sooo expensive and people don't realize just how much they have spent until they sit down and really think about it, or put it on paper and see the totals. So my 15 tanks (5-5 gallon Betta tanks, 3-20 gallon, 3-29 gallon, 2-40 breeders, and 2-75 gallon tanks) MTS addiction I figure has cost me around 5k so far. I think it is worth it, I love it. Problem is... I Need More TANKS! MTS never stops, your always thinking of a way to fit in just 1 more tank into the smallest of spaces.

I live in a one bedroom with my girlfriend our puppy, kitty, 25 male betta's, and my 2 breeder tanks. I breed guppies, and platy's, I also breed mystery snails and I have 2 10 gallon tanks that have alot of snails. I have the filtration of life time on my my small snail tanks. I love sponge filter's. I appreciate the information you provided. I also dream of a fishroom and while I am not at the point of my life where I can actually build one, I have been planning it for years. I was actually surprised at how low the cost was. I have friends who spend 10's of thousands on ATVs, motorcycles, boats and other expensive toys. None of those have the potential to earn money back so from a value point of view a fish room is a good deal. Besides my friends frequently invite me to come play with their toys and I would have a place to drink beer with them during shoulder the shoulder seasons. Love your vids - thanks for sharing.

Thank you. Really appreciate you watching! Check out this video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZfIg6mcrdqKn5I because it's this fish room is essentially in a bedroom-sized space. Before we had the waste water drainage system, I used a 5 gallon bucket and drained tank water into it. I put a pond pump in the bucket with a garden hose and ran it to a drain. That way we weren't caring buckets of water around and the system worked well. We could even drain multiple tanks at once. : -)

Great video I'm sure your number at least doubles with fish substrate plants and the cost to maintain the fish room not cheap either but you do have an awesome fish room love seeing it I will stick to my three or four tanks. Have a good day and keep the videos coming.

Yes the cost can add up very fast..I have found it to be a lot cheaper if you go ahead and buy everything you want in each tank as you get the tank instead of spending a few bucks here and there...I have 2 60 gals on stands , side by side and the cichlid side, I bought it all at the same time including the fish...700 bucks....sounds like a lot of the other one we bought a little here and a little there and we spend at least a thousand...we saved all the receipts..took us a year and a half to get it the way we wanted...I still haven't added them all up bc I know it's going to be way more than the 700 I dropped at the same time...your room is awesome and I'd say 11 gs well spent!

Thank you! I know exactly what you are saying - I didn't something similar with the 150 gallon.

at 6 years old, my story began too. from 6 years old i really wanted a fish tank. but my parents didn't let me "because you have to empty the tank and clean it every week" we did have 3 ponds outside but i wasn't too keen. i wanted a fish tank. i just turned 20, got back into the hobby. (i was always interested in fish, but i was on the sidelines) i currently have 3 tanks in my bedroom and currently talking my parents into letting me get a 300gallon for the dining room downstairs
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
Very cool that you're back into the hobby again! A 300 gallon would be quite the site!

One thing you can do instead of timers for your lights which will allow you to have more control and will be more low profile is to ditch the timers and get some Sonoff Wifi Switch Universal Smart Home Automation Modules. They will splice inline to the power cord of each light and they are tiny modules and super easy to install. You can get them on Amazon for about $10 maybe even cheaper on eBay in bulk. These have been tried and trued in the DIY home automation. This will allow you to set a global timer for all your tanks or individual tanks, set up schedules and routines and even give you voice control from Alexa, Google Home, or Siri. Better yet you can do it all from an app on your smart phone to program them or even turn them on or off manually without it affecting your schedule or routine. Possibilities are endless for how they can be used. The lights is just one example and probably one of the better examples. I agree those Finnex lights are good quality lights. Have them on a couple of my low end grow out tanks for plants.

When I decided to get back into the hobby I thought I was being realistic estimating $150 - $200 for the tank. Then i desided the kits were not what I wanted...things added up quickly. So many extras; water conditioners, the python fill system, master test kits, ornaments, fish food, gravel, filter, lighting, med kit... It's neverending! Over $400 before the tank. This was just one tank nevermind a room of tanks.
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
That sounds about right for a decent sized tank including all the decorations. : -)

Shop lights work really well for a lot of things and less you’re doing some kind of exotic plant tank. Now you can get them in 6500 K and 10,000 K, on racks you can also do 8 foot lights and they’re really cheap for pretty good lights. Poly carbonate sheets used for green houses are pretty cheap and you really really good. Lol. But it’s all pretty expensive, especially if you’re just doing one, plants alone could cost you 100 bucks for even a small tank. Another big cost I found is travel, I don’t want to order fish online and get some sick fish with bad coloring, but there aren’t fish stores in every town anymore, I’ve got to drive an hour to get to Petco in an hour and a half to get to a decent pet store, and I can’t stick all the fish in there at once without huge ammonia spike so I’m going to have to make three or four trips. Lol. $$$$$. EBay helps a lot, sponge filters are cheap, I went with the corner matton filter but they had those double round sponge filters with the adjustable air tubes for three or four bucks apiece if you buy in quantity. I’m still waiting on the heater, fingers crossed on that, But I’m not gonna keep my house at 80°. Lol 11,000 is a pretty big chunk and the ongoing cost of the electric and water and maintenance and replacement parts is going to keep being expensive. I think if you’re going to do something like that either have to be rich or you’re going to have to be breeding and doing it to make some money. But it’s fun. Lol
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
Good point about the travel costs for some people!

I got back in with my old,old,old,240 gallon. Only this time,I went with small fish and made up my mind no constant ties to the LFS like before with buying LIVE food every single week. Only,for that one tank with about 50 small fish...its a can of Tetra color flakes,Tetra color granules,Tetra shrimp wafers,Tetra dried black worms. Plus I thaw out one large shrimp per week..and it's fed in bits everyday. I only caught a break on a animal feed store that sells a high protein Koi food at a dollar a pound. Still,it adds up as the food seems to go too fast.ha. I like to feed my fish!

I do aquascaping on my tanks but the only thing I buy is substrate for growing but other than that I use wild plants from ponds and lakes here in USA Georgia and clean the plant before adding them and I only have 2 plants I have bought anubias which his big now and have 4 big sizes which I started from 1 stem plant and now have 6 African ferns which I also started from 1 stem plant but you can aquascape your tanks cheap if u use what u have in lakes and ponds around where u live o and including driftwood.
