I’m so happy that they changed the ending from the book - partly to have a “happily ever after” but more seriously, I was unhappy how the book ended, basically stating an older woman/younger man relationship couldn’t work. Whereas older men/younger women relationships are “allowed” to work out. So I like how the scriptwriters altered it - left it open, but hopefully it worked out. Why not?
@Belaugh6 ай бұрын
Well said! The movie ending makes sense, and more than anything does two things: demonstrates they were truly in love and not just having a fling, but put Izzy first, and how and why Hayes related to that with his broken past.....and to leave them and us with hope. The book ending does not do this, and much as I can appreciate the harsh ending of the original, a movie needs something more, because audiences invest differently into three dimensional people they see in front of them. And to be honest, who could not want Anne's Solene and Nicholas's Hayes to be anything other than happy ever after after all they have been through?
@AnitaKumari6 ай бұрын
Yeah, why not! When two people's psychological frequency matches and they stay open minded, not thinking what society expects... Their relationship can actually bloom like a fresh flower!!!

There’s a reason why older women don’t end up with younger men. Generally young men are still trying to figure out their lives and older women generally don’t have the time or inclination to want to wait until they do. They want men who are already there and know what they’re doing with their life m. Women value experience in the men they date and men tend to value youth and inexperience because they don’t mind helping her grow into the woman she wants to become. It’s no right or wrong about it women are just different in terms of the things like or want in a partner.

That the time (age gap) between them means nothing, as does their time apart That a watch is very personal, and as he says in the hotel, it looks better on her than on him. It is also an unspoken pledge, and to Hayes, as good a symbol as a ring. It speaks of his heart but is more personal, just between the two of them. And also practical, which they are together- not just romantic. And I should add, she is wearing his watch in the "Five Years Later" - and I would bet she has worn it every day of those five years as the charm to bring him back to her.

I appreciate the objective of giving older women permission to pursue love and happiness. I ask that the producers/director ask themselves why Hayes was underdeveloped as a maturing partner for Solene--the film rewards older women by giving them beautiful young lovers, but I don't think that's sufficient. It is Hayes who asks for more from the relationship. Nicholas Galitzine took every opportunity to give us a glimpse at depth: Hayes isn't a contented boy band member (what if Hayes was cast as Tiny Tim, his bandmates are certainly more childlike, he admits to be attracted to Solene for her intelligence). He grew facial hair for the final scene, but perhaps the Graham Norton interview could have provided us with the list of things Hayes accomplished in 5 years (I can imagine a long list of activities he might have undertaken to respond to the charge to find happiness), so that when he and Solene chat in the future they might have something to talk about! Perhaps a glimpse of Hayes's flat in London (mise en scene) once the art is unpacked--it might reveal that Hayes has become a connoisseur (under Solene's influence)--and maybe a reader with books open and everywhere as he's realized that to keep the love of a smarter older woman there is some internal work that has to happen, or a music studio with awards for his earnest songwriting post-August Moon. There was a real chance to make Solene's triumph much more significant if Hayes had been allowed to escape cliché with her... I believe in Galitzine they had the actor to pull it off as well, so I hold the movie makers to account on this one.
@Belaugh6 ай бұрын
I agree with everything you say. But. Galitzine has explained that the Graham Norton slot was just a happy accident. Julianne Moore (his Mary and George costar) was on the GNS which gave him the window of a few minutes to scurry in, record the song and improvise the chat with Graham to create the update bridge fir the epilogue.
