The "earth works" y'all are speaking of is spot on. My grandmothers farm is mostly flat, but, what is on a slope is terraced so water stands instead of washing down the hill. That is excellent info for new land owners!! Insects will get between the bark and core of that timber and take that shed down in say, 20-30 years. If you want a structure to be around for your kids, you strip the bark. Nice space though!

Also think about what wood you are using. Not all species were created equal for this particular job.

Came here for the thumbnail... disappointed the video had nothing to do with the thumbnail... Video was great but still... why people do this is beyond me...

Actually, the thumbnail has everything to do with the video if you were listening to Paul.

Amazing Structure! this would be the best way to get a great start on a new piece of land. Working with what you have on hand is the best! Dry storage like this is the key to success in any farm or homestead.. you can buy or plant all you want.. but without shelter all of your tools , purchases , and hay/feed will just wither away ... loosing thousands of dollars.. VERY IMPRESSED!!

Yeah, I put in a hugle mound a few years ago. I never found out if it did my plants any good, but it sure made my woodchucks happy! They were especially pleased with the buffet of roots I planted in the mound, and the few plants the woodchucks didn't get, my dogs killed digging for the woodchucks :(

Since then, I stopped listening to Paul Wheaton, and started doing Back to Eden, my plants are much happier now.

BarnGeek You need to customize for your area. I'm not familiar with Paul Wheaton nor woodchucks but hugelkultur and woodchucks don't apparently mix. Could this have been prevented by better observation on your part? Permaculture is about observation first, minimal work with maximal output in the long-run.

Interesting. And as DSH mentioned, it might rot in some areas. Utilizing the correct building materials to accomplish the same goal would be wise, too, so I would need to investigate natural products that would allow me to utilize my hills.

Have you tried lightly burning and sanding the wood 2-3 times? I do that with my walking sticks and never have an issue with rot. It also gets rid of splinters and preserves the wood a bit better but never tried it with a structure.

Use poplar logs treated with boiled linseed oil. Just spray it on with a simple pump sprayer and let dry before building. Worked out well for me in tenn. Airflow is also important. I put in a stove pipe out of the top and kind of spray painted camo to hide it lol. After that I had no more mold on my hay.
@Giganfan2k1
@Giganfan2k1 6 жыл бұрын
That really depends on the wood. Did you use pine, oak, osage orange or black locast? Because two of those are insect and rot resistant. If you are homesteading in the South I can't think of a reason not to grow at least 2 or 3 pollarded/cropped osage orange trees.

no peeling logs is a big big mistake. bugs will live and eat between bark and cambium. promoting faster deterioration. this is why people remove bark.

I really dislike using the word permaculture. It's like it comes with built-in expectations. I try to stay away from labels because it really limits your creativity.
