Knife only. No tarp. No cordage. Storm clouds are rolling in. I quickly build a primitive shelter. Light a fire w/ flint & steel. Camp during the torrential rain.
More detailed description-
In the morning, I hiked into the mountains with limited gear. The weather forecast said thunderstorms and torrential rains were coming that afternoon and evening. I built a shelter only using a knife (no axe, no saw). I used a frame construction method that didn't require cordage. Then I covered the frame with birch bark (no tarp). These are real world bushcraft / survival skills.

I love all your videos man. You remind me so much of my uncle and he has taught me so much about hunting, fishing and basic camping even bushcraft. I enjoy that you are very simple. That's the way we do it here in Georgia!

And another great video Doug... thanks for letting them all know how is was done, maybe the way it should be done still. "You know those lights were bright on Broadway That was so many years ago Before we all lived here in Florida Before the Mafia took over Mexico There are not many who remember They say a handful still survive To tell the world about The way the lights went out And keep the memory alive..." (Billy Joel)

Hi Doug ☺ thanks for taking us along whith you, nice easy shelter setup , looked like someone had been there before you, the sound of the water was very relaxing, and watching the fire after dark brings back memories of times long ago, good times I might add.i hope you slept well, and woke up renewed. Stay safe my friend, best wishe's to you and your's, may your God go whith you. Stuart, Uk.

Yes. I came across the fire ring, and decided to camp there in order to leave less of a trace. I picked up trash and tried to make the site better. I could see pressed down areas where many tents had been set up over the years. It was a little surprising since the area was kind of remote. -and not easy to get to. Nice to hear from you, Stuart. God bless.

Thank you. I've been trying to learn and improve over the last 3 years. It's a challenge keeping the camera from drowning in downpours like that. It's just me in the woods and I don't have fancy equipment.

Great video loved it and shows what can be done in that kind of situation, wouldn't it have been easier when you were placing that bark on the frame you made to have started from the bottom and worked up
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. In this case I started at the top. The reason was that I quickly collected nearby birch bark. I had a few sheets that were large and no holes. But most sheets were smaller and/or had issues. So I started by placing the best sheets where they would protect me most. It's not that hard to slip a shingle under another when necessary. If I was taking more time and building a more permanent structure, then yes it would make more sense to start at the bottom. And all the shingles I used would be good ones.

Yes. That was an overnight in the White Mts. It's been a while since the trip. I believe my socks were damp. I think I was drying my socks and warming my feet by the fire. The rocks around the fire warm up and plus you have radiant heat. Yes is was a peaceful spot in the mountains. I hiked quite a ways in so it was just me and the animals.

Very nice video! The set-up looked fairly comfortable. Keeping the fire going in the rain brought back memories, some good some not so much! Thanks for sharing! I meant to ask, in your last video you used a tomahawk and I wondered if that was something new or have you always had it and I just missed it?
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. That is a Cold Steel "Trailhawk" tomahawk that I have had for many years. But, I don't bring it on every trip. A lot of times I've just been bringing one tool, basically (like tomahawk, machete, or fixed blade knife). It's a solo survival video thing that I think a lot of people like. I'm here to make videos that you want to watch. So I appreciate comments and suggestions.... There is one video where I use the tomahawk to make fire (flint & steel)

Doug, another great video! Say, do you sell “Doug Shoe Bushcraft” Velcro morale patches?
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
We don't have patches available yet, but they are coming. I don't have a time frame (sorry). There may be stickers available first. I should have been moving quicker on these things. Covid 19 and all the shutdowns, etc did throw a wrench into it. But I shouldn't make excuses.... A web site is also on the way.... Thank you so much for asking. It's motivating me to get things done.
