May I ask why do people bake a pot after making and dried and then they bake why is that does it strengthen it
@lucidacatartica4 жыл бұрын
If you polish the pot with the stone at a "leather hard" stage of dryness, it will seal the pores making it truly impermeable and give it a beautiful shine. Leather hard feels just like leather. The clay is hard, but still presents moisture and minimum plasticity.... the pot is beautiful!! You did such a great job shaping it!!!

I love how in the beginning of the video you asked any of your viewers for any tips they might know... So humble. It just goes to show you that even if you are fully submersible yourself in something like you have with nature, there is still so much to learn. Even professionals don't do everything and knowledge is something that comes over time and being repetitive.

I don't claim to be an expert at any one thing. I'm not even trying to be an expert. I want to learn many skills and I know that means I will never be great at any one thing. However, I really do enjoy working with clay and I find it very useful to make so many things that you can imagine.

I found that when manually removing impurities from clay, a good method is to tear off small pieces from your chunk and flatten them against your palm. This gives small rocks and dry lumps no place to hide, they'll stick out both visibly and haptically. If you need to go even further, you can pinch very small pieces between your fingertips to find even smaller impurities.
@user-jb1tu9ic7y4 жыл бұрын
That's a good tip!

yes or make a slurry and work through a basket weave to remove big chunks first and nead nead nead and nead x 7 x 70 it should be the concisity of mashed potatoes. then dry to the state he had it for moulding use a basket to roughly form it into shape. ask kzbin.info/door/8mUzv23RRA_wxwwmbQKzhQ

Yes, that is basically what I've been doing. First I remove the larger stones and then pinch small pieces and work that between my fingers. If I take my time and do a thorough job it works well.

I've done some clay pottery. I use a rock to break the clay into small pieces and put it in a vat of water and work it till its the consistency of thin pancake batter, then pour it through a small screen to filter out the small stones, sticks etc out of it. Then I let it rest for a few days and the clay settles in the bottom and the excess water can be poured off till all you got it beautiful clean clay. If you got any broken fired pottery you can smash that into a fine powder and add that to the clay. It helps keep the clay from breaking during the firing process. ATM I'm looking for another really good clay deposit on my property. Have you thought of making a wattle fence to surround your squash plants at night to keep the wildlife from snacking on them? During the day you could lift them up to give them the sun and at night replace them to keep rabbits and mice etc from munching on them. Really Nice video and can't wait to see the next one.
@irenebrown6454 жыл бұрын
I have processed clay that way also, water and mixing to rid impurities, like grass small sticks, reducing water mixing till you have a good consistancy. work it and dry it till it is workable, makes a fine texture. Sorry I did not continue on primative, fired it in a kiln. lol

Make a shallow depression in the ground in a place where the water can run down. You can use some of your clay to build a lip on the depression The ground above where you dug the clay would be a good place. Put the clay in the pit with water and stir it around. Make another shallow depression downhill from the first one. Stir the clay in the water again separating out stones. Let it settle for a few minutes. Make a channel to let the cloudy water run out. This will separate the clay (floating in the water) from the stones and sand. Let the water in the lower depression evaporate. Then you can collect the clay from the lower depression and repeat the process if you want until you get the grade of clay you want.

Hola Chad.

Hi, first off great job! So here are some tips! When attaching clay rough up both ends with scratches and scrapes and apply water to one end. That creates a stronger bond. Another tip is to use maybe a smooth strong leaf to buff out your masterpiece, or your hands with water letting each side dry before flipping.

I don't know if you see this comment. I've been working with pinch method. Honestly, it's giving me results I like. When I told my first run all broke, it's because my first run was a practice run, applied alot of yours and Mr.Plants methods. I keep coming back to this video. I have sand clay mixed with sand clay I bought. The pinch pots are crazy you can make a bunch of cool neat things for the outdoor life. And guess what, I found a better clay source, and different kinds, like a white clay, a brown clay, and a reddish tan clay in different areas where I am at. I notice animals were clawing for insect foods and stuff and immediate knew I was looking at clay, so I grabbed my digging stick and poke around the area, about 1 foot less in certain areas is lots of clay. I'll keep you updated. I don't know this clay, I know and am familiar with the clay from Cold springs texas. And whatever clay I used in school so I had a tiny bit of experience in pottery just didn't know if I was still capable. Well I'm off here for now, I was a primitive brute most of my day, and that pretty much made me tired, I have insomnia so I look for and indulge the sleepy tired feeling when I can. Any amount of sleep is good for a person like me.

If you fill a cloth(shirt, bag, or anything that won't leak) with sand, you can then shape clay over the sand to make an almost perfect bowl shape. btw i love your videos.
@musicguy204 жыл бұрын
An easy way is to add more water to the clay and grab little pieces like you had done. Then find a big flat rock outside at feet level. Put the clay ball above your head and throw it down on the rock as hard as you can. It will soften the clay after awhile and rocks will appear each time it flattens. Keep doing this until all the clay has the same soft consistency. When you get a big ball of it after awhile work all the air bubbles out by smashing it still. You could let it sit over night to soften even further. Then your clay will be soft enough to do as you please. You won’t have to smash your hands as much doing it this way. Hope this helps! Maybe you can make a flat bowl and grill some meat on it 🤤

Try using Yucca fibers to assist with cutting the clay into manegable pieces. It would be much easier than taring pieces off, and allows for even portions to work with. You could make a tool by tying the thread to two small sturdy pieces of wood and using them as handles to push the thread down into the clay.

Chad, dilute the clay into water. This way stones and chips are separated, get rid of them easily. Then allow the clay soup to dry and you get pure clay.
@axelSixtySix4 жыл бұрын
@Alex Lars People needs to know there's an easy way. Don't you realy get it ? Chad spent a huge amount of time to remove chips and stone from dry stuff. He deserved the best method next time.
@axelSixtySix4 жыл бұрын
@Alex Lars Please don't make yourself much ridiculous. You're trolling a subject you do not master, obviously. You get your supposed knowledge from KZbin, I guess. The technique I gave was envolved by primitive civilisations all over the world. Cleaned clay vases was built since around 30.000 BC, and earlier in some areas. I harvested my first clay back to 1978.
@axelSixtySix4 жыл бұрын
@Alex Lars despite my warnings, you managed to make yourself even more ridiculous. Hopefully shame don't kill. I learned pottery back in 1976 while most of your KZbin heroes was probably not born. I'm afraid I have nothing much to learn about pottery, clay harvesting, enamels and ovens. I built all my ovens by myself, from mud to finish. I never owned any electric or gas ovens because despite the money they bring no soul to the pieces. I'm specialized in early Celtic ceramics reproductions, and I worked several times for archeologists. I really enjoyed this conversation. Thank you.
@ChadZuberAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Let's keep it cool! I always say that there are many ways to accomplish a task. Some ways produce a more visually pleasing product, some ways are faster, some ways are easier. The technique I used allows one to form the pot in just a few hours and requires no time to wait for separation. I know that there were still some small stones inside. Regardless, the pot still worked. No, it's not super smooth. Yes, it has major carbonization. But it works.... That said, I really appreciate the tips you share to produce a higher quality product and I will certainly be practicing the techniques people have been sharing with me. I love pottery and I have a LOT to learn! Thank you!

There's so many types of clay as there's places on earth, and your clay seems to be very fat because I was amazed how easily you puted this mid size bowl together... Clay from my backyard is gray and usually it turns pink or white after firing, because it's quite young deposit it has larger particules it's also less fat, less pliable, less resistant for heat shock. I think you are pretty lucky having such a great reasoure around.

Best is to let the entire batch dry up. Then you can smash that with a rock.... clay will pulverize and it's easier to remove the rocks an impurities... Was the presence of readily available clay a large factor in deciding to built your hut where you did? Or was it a coincidence which you discovered later?
@ChadZuberAdventures4 жыл бұрын
When I was building the hut I had no intention or even though of working with clay. But as I was digging dirt to make adobe bricks I found that about twelve inches below the surface there was a bed of clay. Most of the clay was mixed with decomposed granite but then I found a spot that was pure clay. I collected some and started messing around with it forming small bowls. Eventually through trial and error I was able to make a bowl that did not crack. So, yeah, purely coincidence.

Last summer a construction crew dug what was probably several hundred tons of the finest grey clay from under the street in front of my house, and I saved a 5 gal bucket's worth. Watching this makes me want to go play with it and see what can be done.

Oh yeah! Definitely do something with that. That's a treasure!

A tip for when you prepare the clay is try to mix the clay without rocks with yellow sand, it give the clay more plasticity and is more easily to work

I have never seen yellow sand around here. Where does yellow sand exist? And what minerals is it composed of?

Great video! Have you tried making pinch pots? I think that method could be easier when it comes to smaller storage/drinking vessels

What is the big dry thing he uses to mix and transport the clay? I've noticed it used as a funnel for catching rain water in a previous video. Is it a plant?
