King of New York is a few beats away from being a genuine masterpiece. Primm is correct in the plan being flimsy as h3ll (worse is we don't know what's driving Walken to be so charitable). Also, his love interest/lawyer disappeared in the final third of the movie. Buscemi and Gus Fings were wasted. Also, why were the cops so hard up to catch Frank? Interesting trivia: The Hispanic lawyer/fixer for Frank was almost casted as Jules in Pulp Fiction (he appears in the movie as a bartender).

The movie to me feels like they wanted to make it 3 hours long but were forced to condense half the story so it turned out like it did. I still really like the movie, the style and world of the movie are undeniably badass, just a shame that it didn't reach it's full potential.

Roger Guinvere Smith is an all star. He was always cast as evil, sneaky, lightskin villian in the 80s movies, but he was really a great actor. He did an amazing 1 man show about Huey Newton.

Primm, how did you know?! Ever since I watched your review of New Jack City I've been wanting you to do King of New York. It's like New Jack City but SO MUCH WEIRDER. In terms of the way it's filmed and the way the narrative unfolds, it's one of the oddest feeling films I've ever seen, if that makes sense. I don't think I ever got around to suggesting that you cover this film but however you found it, I'm glad you did. You a Black All Star Primm 😁💯

@@micmorgan84 my mother told me the movie is very gloomy. Like it’s depressing..It is? But “King of New York” really is just one of those movies that leaves you sad cause everyone dies on both sides. Like all Frank wanted to do was clean the streets up. And maybe leave the drug game alone this last time. Frank White was like Robin Hood.
@micmorgan843 жыл бұрын
@@91Definite She’s right. Something about the way the violence is portrayed feels authentic. I felt the same way about Brandon Lee’s the crow when I saw it even though hat has a happier ending it just feels real murky and hopeless.

Pretty much all the films by the director are wild. He started off making Underground P then made a Serial Killer Horror film then did an insane Revenge film. Abel Ferrera is his name his best known other film is Bad Lieutenant with Harvey Keitel
