This is the perfect example of style over substance. Hype Williams had an assortment of music video ideas but not much else. Williams needed a mentor into this medium, instead he got big name rappers who would’ve been better off with smaller roles. In another world this could’ve been great, instead it just looks cool.
@elleofhearts8471
@elleofhearts8471 10 ай бұрын
I agree with everything you said and I can also see the casting decision to cast all the music talent in big roles because the rappers themselves know no one would cast them in big roles under any other circumstance. I could see it like a bunch of friends/colleagues making a movie for themselves first and the world to enjoy second too. The movie wasn't a huge mainstream commercial Success and it wasn't meant to be. I think the movie came out as everyone involved wanted it to for the most part.

I was 14 when I first saw this movie on PPV. My best friend Andrew and I rented it on PPV, and we had NO IDEA what we were watching, hated it, and this review is the closest I've came to rewatching it -- I subbed, I like your work. But I NEVER forgot how badass that opening was with the acapella Soul II Soul as the opening song, and ended up buying the soundtrack on cassette because I LOVED D'Angelo's Devil's Pie. Oh, and I had a HUGE crush on T-Boz back then, something about that voice....oh, and rest in peace Andrew, I still miss you buddy.

Hype Williams was the master of hip hop and r&b videos in the '90s. If you go back and look at all of the best videos from the mid to late '90s it's a high probability that he directed those. The man just couldn't write a story to save his life. He can damn sure make it look beautiful though.

You can tell this was directed by someone who mainly does music videos because even though the cinematography looks good aesthetically, literally every shot is stylized, which means that it’s style loses its impact after awhile. In a 3-5 minutes music video you can do that, but a 90min film is too much. You have to save those shots for the important moments to highlight their importance and emotion. Basic scenes of two people talking to progress the plot doesn’t need elaborate lighting and composition necessarily. It just becomes distracting after awhile. It also fucks up the visual continuity of shots. There are several scenes in the movie where the continuity is fucked to the point where it’s confusing to even understand the basic action of what’s going on.

I have the privilege of meeting DMX in 2013 as airport security in Miami. I cannot tell you how humble and cool this dude was. He was very skinny when I met him and told me he was headed to rehab at that time. I told him how awesome it was him working with jet li and 50 cent. He was one of my idol...a superstar. I'm sad dawg...he's gone. RIP DMX (1970-2021)😔💐🙏

Rule of thumb Primm: when you see bad acting in the film, it is the director fault because they are supposed to get the best performance out of the actor. Great directors rarely have bad acting in their films because they are aware of the actor in question range so they won't put them in a scenario where they look like Tboz but sometimes there's no way around it if they have no say in who is cast.

Kevin Smith just loves dialogue, and he doesn't really know how to pace things. I really don't like any of his movies outside of the view askewniverse. Jersey girl was okay. I worked at the hard rock that Ben afflecks had his on stage melt down, and that was our kitchen, that they changed the baby in. That was the Philadelphia hard rock, but the outside was the new York hard rock. Not that any of that matters.

A lot of the scenes are based on some of his songs. The barbershop scene is the second verse of “The Message”. “So dumb, felt my leg burn, then it got numb. Spun around and shot one, heard shots and dropped,son. Caught a hot one, somebody take this biscuit ‘fore the cops come.”

Africa ain't a country, that's like saying "I'm moving to Asia" instead of the actual country you're planning to move to. When the plans aren't concrete you can name a continent, sure, but by the time you move there I'd say it's pretty important to have a more specific idea of where you're going... "I mean, me and my man like three tickets to Africa please I mean."

yall love saying. NIGGA WE KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW damn! Africa got like 52-53 countries. People usually say Africa just to give it a slight location. Most of us only know what 3-4 countries in Africa and you be so bothered, STILL, because we don't say where exactly. Get over it.
@chantanelsmith5656
@chantanelsmith5656 3 жыл бұрын
@CreeWilly Its plenty of people who cannot name ALL 52-53 countries within Africa and why is that even an issue? Hell! I can barely think of 7 because it's irrelevant in my life and useless information. Tf I need to know all countries that reside in Africa for? Its almost a joke for Africans to expect people to be aware of every single country in Africa... for what, not even to be funny but seriously, why do I need to know that.
