This is the perfect example of style over substance. Hype Williams had an assortment of music video ideas but not much else. Williams needed a mentor into this medium, instead he got big name rappers who would’ve been better off with smaller roles. In another world this could’ve been great, instead it just looks cool.
@elleofhearts847110 ай бұрын
I agree with everything you said and I can also see the casting decision to cast all the music talent in big roles because the rappers themselves know no one would cast them in big roles under any other circumstance. I could see it like a bunch of friends/colleagues making a movie for themselves first and the world to enjoy second too. The movie wasn't a huge mainstream commercial Success and it wasn't meant to be. I think the movie came out as everyone involved wanted it to for the most part.

But I NEVER forgot how badass that opening was with the acapella Soul II Soul as the opening song, and ended up buying the soundtrack on cassette because I LOVED D'Angelo's Devil's Pie. Hype Williams was the master of hip hop and r&b videos in the '90s. If you go back and look at all of the best videos from the mid to late '90s it's a high probability that he directed those. The man just couldn't write a story to save his life. He can damn sure make it look beautiful though.

You can tell this was directed by someone who mainly does music videos because even though the cinematography looks good aesthetically, literally every shot is stylized, which means that it’s style loses its impact after awhile. In a 3-5 minutes music video you can do that, but a 90min film is too much. You have to save those shots for the important moments to highlight their importance and emotion. Basic scenes of two people talking to progress the plot doesn’t need elaborate lighting and composition necessarily. It just becomes distracting after awhile. It also fucks up the visual continuity of shots. There are several scenes in the movie where the continuity is fucked to the point where it’s confusing to even understand the basic action of what’s going on.
@camplo7772 жыл бұрын
True good observation. It actually was too beautiful. Needed more grit & realism. Reminds of the 1st transformers live action movie. The robots was just shining like theyre in a car show

Rule of thumb Primm: when you see bad acting in the film, it is the director fault because they are supposed to get the best performance out of the actor. Great directors rarely have bad acting in their films because they are aware of the actor in question range so they won't put them in a scenario where they look like Tboz but sometimes there's no way around it if they have no say in who is cast.

True, the third verse. That verse is the illest verse on the whole Illmatic album. One of the illest in rap history. When I first saw Belly and realized what was going on with the kid, that shit made the movie to me. Everything else was pretty low budget and terrible acting but this one part made the movie for me.

Kevin Smith just loves dialogue, and he doesn't really know how to pace things. I really don't like any of his movies outside of the view askewniverse. Jersey girl was okay. I worked at the hard rock that Ben afflecks had his on stage melt down, and that was our kitchen, that they changed the baby in. That was the Philadelphia hard rock, but the outside was the new York hard rock. Not that any of that matters.
