This is my favourite song of all time. Glad you guys got to it finally. I don't visit the channel often anymore, but when I do it's to check for Primordial or something I hold in equally high esteem. My ancestors survived the journey on these ships, leaving Ireland during that period. I'm pretty thankful to be around, given what they went through and the horrific conditions so many endured. Not only so many perished in the famine, but the mortality rate on the ships leaving was beyond belief. Listening to this song on a dark night, sitting on the beach with the waves crashing in the background counts among the most haunting experiences I have ever had.

A quote from Wikipedia, regarding the Irish Great Famine: The historian Cecil Woodham-Smith wrote in The Great Hunger: Ireland 1845-1849 that no issue has provoked so much anger and embittered relations between England and Ireland "as the indisputable fact that huge quantities of food were exported from Ireland to England throughout the period when the people of Ireland were dying of starvation".

Also, they didn't really know what Coffin Ships were. Coffin ships were ships used by emigrants trying to escape the famine by travelling to America. The ships were basically more profitable to sink than to reach destination (bad condition and over insured). 30% mortality on them from hunger, thirst and diseases.

@@VinAndSori... and since you were shocked in another video that anyone could dislike the royal family, they did play a key part in all of that going on in those times. These days not so much, instead they just take tax payers money, live in palaces (which we are paying to renovate), get chauffeured around in gold carriages etc, while poor people have to visit food banks to feed their children.

The famine changed the entire course of Irish history, not to mention the politics, the language- (becoming more of an English speaking country with most native Irish speakers dying or leaving during the Famine- and its survivors growing up and learning more English), and of course the Population. There was over 8 million in the country at the time. Today- the Republic, and Northern Ireland together- has about 6 million, which is a considerable increase from say 30 years ago. But it will never regain those high numbers of the 1800s. A huge percentage of the 35 million Irish-Americans ,alongside the millions of Canadians and Australians with Irish ancestry can claim their lineage to Famine emigrants. Ireland was under British rule for centuries at that point, and the aftermath of the Famine was definitely a catylist for the series of events that ultimately lead to the partition of the country in 1921. There was heaps of other foods in the other fields at the time, only it was continuously shipped across to mainland Britian ,as Ireland was a colony with no official government of its own. Go Raibh Maith Agat (Thank You) for taking time to review this! You never really see other Irish rock bands apart from U2 , The Cranberries, , or Thin Lizzy get the recognition, let along reaction videos on youtube. If the lyrics and song itself sparked an intrest, check out more info and backstory on the Famine. Tanks again!

Here in Canada we used to have public service commercials that highlight a piece of Canadian history called a piece of our heritage. One of them was about the children that survived the coffin ships. Some of the ships got stuck in the ice of the St. Lawrence river and families had to walk across the unsafe ice and many lost their parents falling through the ice. The commercial is about the French families in Quebec that adopted those children and how they let the children keep their Irish names so they could honour their parents and where they came from. It is said that those ships had a 30% mortality rate and that sharks were seen to follow the ships because of how many dead bodies were thrown overboard. The people on these ships also had very little to eat as some of the ship owners provided the least food provisions and lodging they could legally offer. This is one of the saddest and darkest moments in Canada's history.

Young hearts born with grief Shall pay the penalty of truth A season of stolen youth Shall teach old hearts to break It feels like I've been here before Here where the animals lay down to die So we stood alone on a distant shore Our broken spirits in rags and tatters Nerve and muscle, heart and brains Lost to Ireland, lost in vain Pause and you can almost hear The sounds echo down through the ages The creak of the burial cart Here in humiliation and sorrow Not mixed with indignation One is driven to exclaim Oh god, that bread should be so dear And human flesh so cheap [*] Young hearts are born with such grief We have paid the penalty of truth A season of our stolen youth Shall teach our hearts to break [Lyrics: A.A. Nemtheanga] [Music: MacUilliam and Primordial] [*Taken from a memorial to the dead at a mass grave in Skibereen, Co. Cork] ["Between the years 1845 and 1849 a famine ravaged Ireland and over 3 million people were lost to a combination of starvation and emigration I said once before the history of my land is a litany of tragedy and blood, these four years represent possibly the greatest tragedy the country has endured. It still hangs over Ireland and set the tone for Irish people to leave Ireland shores to the present day. The coffin ships themselves were what the ships that set sail for America in search of a new and better life were called. It's with this song we honour the memory of this great tragedy and those poor souls who lost their lives."]

You guys don't know yet (unless you investigated further right after the reaction) what you hit upon with PRIMORDIAL! This is like discovering a piece of gold in the ground, start digging, and once the dirt comes off it's a frigging gold mountain. That's what they are. The deepest band ever, among so many admittedly great and awesome ones... Their lyrical topics are not for the fair-weather rock-n-roll fan by any means, they hit like a ton of bricks but somehow make you empathize and actually care - like you become a better, more invested human being by partaking in PRIMORDIAL's philosophy and worldview... The lyrical part is where they get a leg upon anyone selling escapist dragons and dungeons tales, or generic "rebel against society" postures, any day.

They have a divisive style of songwriting. I've heard many people say that when they hear a Primordial song, they basically just wait for it to begin, but it doesn't for 10 minutes and then it ends. I love Primordial and they are one of my favorite bands ever, but I can see why some people find them boring and repetitive. They'll never be a massive band. I'd be surprised if they surpassed the fame and popularity they got with To The Nameless Dead anymore.

Thanks for the shout out! I'm glad you enjoyed the song. Primordial have several amazing songs but I figured I'd go with something with some emotional heft and it seemed to do the trick. Alan's vocals are pretty commanding and demand your attention which is a huge plus since he can convey so much emotion with his singing. He can tell quite the story because of that. Hopefully you'll revisit Primordial in the future. I've noticed several good suggestions in the comments.

The Great Famine was a man-made disaster that was caused by the British oppression and imperialism of the Irish - forcing them into destitution and infertile land where only potatoes could grow. When the potato blight came, they lost their main food source. Of the ones that didn't die in Ireland, so many died on the ships as refugees, hence the title of the song.

That famine was one of the most heinous things to ever have happened to any nation. To this day, the population hasn't recovered. Even worse is there was food in Ireland, they raised other crops but those crops were shipped off the island to Britain. The Choctaw native american tribe sent aid to Ireland even though they were oppressed and poor themselves. The Irish thought this so symbolically significant that they created a sculpture to honor this in County Cork. Recently Ireland have sent aid to the Choctaw during the Covid pandemic. It reminds me of how when Jesus and his disciples witnessed how a poor widow gave two copper coins to the temple he told them that she was then giving much more than the loose change of the rich. The Choctaw didn't have much at all but still managed to collect about 5.000 dollars worth to send to the Irish because they wanted to help. It's a touching historical anecdote I think.

Primordial is an incredible fuckin band, saw them live and yes, this is about the Irish Potato Famine, the Irish that left to America, the ships were called the Coffin Ships as many died on the trip. There's also the issue of British taking many crops OUT of Ireland while the famine was in full effect, starving further Irish. It was a nightmarish period for those there. It's one of those extremely depressing moments in human history. I saw them live in Cleveland when they came through here during Paganfest with IIRC Korpiklaani, and they stole the show. HIGHLY recommend the song As Rome Burns that they dedicated to the United States during the show. Their lyrics are so damn deep, and I'm SO glad y'all covered em finally.

I remember I used to see the name of Primordial on concert flyers, festivals line-ups, etc, and I just was ignoring them because I wasn't attracted by their name, it sounded a bit pretentious to me, and because I don't like black metal very much (they're often tagged as black metal). Well for only stupid reasons which mask the real one: a lack of curiosity. Then a couple of years ago I was at a metal festival and as I was passing near their performance with my friends, we were hooked by the singer and the conviction of the band. He had something very special, not only in the way he looks on stage, but also his vocals, you can feel he is telling stories, even if you don't understand what he sings, and that is so rare in music. Of course they sang this song that day, then "As Rome Burns" I remember, and they instantly became one of my favorite bands. Their albums from The Gathering Wilderness (which features The Coffin Ships and probably is their best in my opinion) to Where Greater Men Have Fallen are all jewels. I have a sweet spot though for At the Puritan's Hand and the song "The Mouth of Judas" which is one of their most emotional. Anyway, great pick!

I expected you to like this a lot, you did like Bathory, and this sounds a bit like a modern (and Irish) Bathory. Great band, they have 2 albums in particular which are just fantastic, their last one not so much. And great band live too. Since you've done Bathory, Primordial, Windir... maybe Moonsorrow is in the menu in the future? Fantastic finnish band in the same vain. On a more personal note, maybe someone will get you to listen to Saor one of these days, for some Scottish Atmospheric Black Metal with bagpipes... you don't hear that everyday. And it's a 1 man band too. It's not nearly as "known" as Primordial, but you'd like it for sure.

@@VinAndSori For MOONSORROW i would suggest "Ruttolehto", "Haaska" or "Jotunheim". They are all epic and majestic. Maybe the unused listener has to listen to it 2 or 3 times, but then the songs open their full awesomes. For SAOR i would suggest "Aura". How can a song with blast beats be so beautiful? ;-)

I once heard the metal anthropologist Sam Dunn call Black metal a mix of the harshest crust punk imaginable and Wagner. In Primordial's case its very accurate. They've got the national romanticism, mythology and harmonies of Wagner(think the Prelude to Tristan und Isolde) with punky(but romantic) vocals and attitude.

EDIT: Fixed a typo | Yes, *Anathema* - Vin & Sori have been doing reaction videos since 29.3.2018; *one* on that day, then *one* per day on 3.4.2018, 5.4.2018, 6.4.2018, 8.4.2018, and *one* per day _from_ 10.4.2018 _to_ 24.4.2018, then *two* on 25.4.2018, again *one* per day _from_ 26.4.2018 _to_ 28.4.2018, and *two* per day regularly since 29.4.2018 - any *exceptions* Vin can check from a Master List he surely has somewhere, but by my calculations (hey, I'm a former Math nerd!) that makes 25 + 730 + 96 = *851* songs, and *none* of them are Anathema, but there sure are bands with _more than_ 10, even more than 20 songs reacted to! *STOP IT!* _Balance!_ *Primordial* was one band _way_ overdue, and that is _because of_ the binging of the backcatalogue of certain "favoured" bands. I _do_ like most of those bands, but *not* at the cost of others! What would Jesus do??? I too love _Regret_ by *Anathema* - it's one of their most powerful songs - but to really see the _evolution_ of the band we *need* to start from their debut album. _Sweet Tears_ and _Sleepless_ would be awesome choices. Now I am _sleepful_ and gotta get some "Zzz"...

How exactly does the Patreon thing work? I would have requested Primordial long ago had I known exactly what Patreon is. I know I placed Primordial on the web site request thing a LONG time ago. It got very few votes. It's all good though, seeing as most of what I placed as requests on the list have been reviewed/reacted to. LOL Just waiting for another Irish band, Cruachan to be reacted to. Specifically the song Perversion, Corruption, and Sanctity pt. 1. It would yield an interesting discussion.

So the majority of the alliances are separated based on the sub genres they want to focus on. For example, Trve Kvlt generally suggests Black Metal, Death Metal, and Doom Metal bands while Anarchy 99 covers more of the punk and -core related sub genres. To choose a song, usually the alliance leader will determine what type or style of songs the alliance members can suggest for a vote. The alliance members pick their songs and then a vote takes place and whatever wins the vote will eventually get reacted to. In the case of Primordial, The Xtreme Underground Alliance held a vote for Folk Metal songs and this one won the vote. There's also times where an alliance will basically have a lottery and the winner of that lottery gets to pick all of the songs that their fellow alliance members get to vote on.
