In 1993, a friend and I worked on the USF golf course, in Tampa. He was working one Saturday, and saw these 3 peculiar guys at the course. Turned out to be Primus, who were playing at the nearby auditorium that night. He ended up playing a round with them and got a free backstage pass to the show. I should have gone to work that Saturday.

Les and Primus are God's gift to us older hard rock / punk guys. His talent and music really bridge the gap in so may ways. You should look into the "Claypool Lennon Delirium when you can my friend. Les and Sean Lennon make some serious jams. Much love to your channel :)

Les also bridged the gap from punk/metal to jam band music and funk. He was in a Spinal Tap like mocumentary called Electric Apricot and the Quest for Festeroo that is just wonderful. He's a drummer in that band and it's hilarious.

Back around 92' - 93' I was attending school at a HBCU and working at the local pizza place when I met a fellow that became a good friend and we spent hours and hours listening to music. Not that it mattered but he was black and I am white but what did matter is he knew lots of good music that I was unaware of, and vice-versa. One of the bands that I introduced him to and he took an immediate liking to was Primus, almost more than anything else I ever played for him. I really loved hanging out with that guy and like most people we finished school and went on with our lives. I found out recently that he passed a few years ago, a boat capsized and he drowned. He would have liked Oysterhead. Watching you guys sort of takes me back to watching him react all those years ago.

First time I saw Primus was opening for Rush on the Roll the Bones tour 1992. Saw that tour twice. Then on their short tour after lollapaloza ‘93 then again on the Tales from the Punchbowl tour in 1995. Last time I saw them was 2016 opening for Tool. Every time it was always Tim(Herb)Alexander on the drums. So mad I didn’t get to see them on their Rush: A Tribute to Kings tour. Was a Covid postponement and then a Hurricane postponement, I don’t know if they ever played that show in NOLA.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤

I see someone else mentioned Bootsy too! There are many amazing bassists, but I feel Les and Bootsy (maybe Entwistle of The Who) are outliers who play in a wildly unique way. Primus put a DVD out roughly 20 years ago titled ‘Hallucino-genetics’. Mind bending performance. A stand out track for me is ‘Southbound Pachyderm’. Three people sound like a storm coming, it’s that good.

Played primus for a friend a while back who never heard them cause he grew up listening to rap and r&b. When the song started he looked at me dead serious and said " whatchu think just cause im black that mean i gotta love this shit with the bass?" I smiled and said yeah thats exactly what i thought and then he laughed and told me it actually sounded good and he liked it 😂😂 dude has 1 or 2 primus songs on his playlists now ,ive heard john the fisherman in his car and too many puppies lol. and he actually learned their names lol. I think primus is just like a funk groove that you either feel or you dont, you dont listen to primus.. you feel it 🤌 glad to see you guys jamming out along with me while watching this video 😁

I saw primus at the Berkeley Square in 89. it was like discovering the Beatles. there were no cell phones or internet. we would just get wind they were playing and ran to get tickets. it was unreal. it changed everything. I thought they were too huge to be just a local band playing small clubs. I knew they'd be global. I mailed friends back east the demo album (only on vinyl). then they blew up. I knew they would, but couldn't believe it

I think early MTV- when they played music and videos, they introduced me to Primus, thanks to that wonderful video- Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. Then eventually started looking further and ended up completely hooked. Another even more insane group- it is YOUR fault I am also hooked on Mr. Bungle, I had never heard of them till you reacted to Carnival. Thanks! I love them now as well!

You make a point about what would’ve happened if nobody had ever recommended Primus to you. But that’s what music is. I’m pretty well versed in rock music anywhere from the mid-60s to the late ‘90s and while I did discover a lot of bands myself, a lot of bands I got into was because a classmate or coworker or friend at one point said, “oh you like this? then check out these guys!” if someone recommends something to me, I always check it out. Some of the recommendations are not for me, but some of them became my favourite bands.

Primus is generally categorized as Groove Metal but they sound so much different than other Groove Metal bands like Pantera or Prong, I call them Hardcore Funk, like if metal bands had more funk and jazz influence than blues and baroque along with the hardcore punk bands of the 70s like Misfits and Black Flag.

Primus' audience is probably built up of all sorts of different people. They had a few pretty high profile weird music videos in the 90s, so anyone watching MTV might've been reeled in by those. Then, they were also on some huge concert tours/festivals in the 90s that would've given them exposure to a much wider audience. They're also obviously beloved by musicians who are super into the talent of the musicians in the band and heard through word of mouth how good they are. They had some tracks in the Tony Hawk games which must've earned them a lot of fans. Then, I bet there are people into other sort of outsider weirdo music like Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, etc. who found out about them through that avenue. The members have also been key figures in some cool metal bands (Blind Illusion, Possessed, and the famous Les Claypool audition for Metallica), so some metal guys probably heard about them that way. Les has also been in some bands with some other famous musicians Oysterhead with the dude from Phish and the drummer from The Police, a duo he's in with John Lennon's son, a band with Buckethead, etc. Finally, especially starting around the turn of this century, they had a lot of overlap with the jam band circuit, doing collabs with jam band musicians and playing a lot of those festivals, giving even more exposure. I think I found out about them in high school through a friend who was a bass player and was really into them and stuff like Zappa and Beefheart.
