Primus is unique. I'm not a musically minded person I don't understand what makes music work but I feel like often all 3 of them are playing different songs at the same time but it works somehow. That's gotta be even harder than following normal music rules.

Primus opened for Rush on a tour back in the early-90s and the two bands would jam together before the shows using instruments that they had not played (Alex Lifeson apparently played an accordion and a flute and Larry LaLonde played a clarinet). Imagine a Tommy the Cat rendition from those jams!

One of the thing u have to realize is that if you hear the bass high up in the mix, that means the bass player is a key member... For example: Steve Harris (bass) of Iron Maiden is the band leader and key songwriter/ producer, so his bass is very audible in Iron Maiden songs... Ian Hill (bass) of Judas Priest is not a key member, so his presence is very low-key. The same thing w/ bands like Overkill (bassist D.D. Verni)... Motorhead (distorted bass by Lemmy Kilmister) ... Megadeth (bassist David Ellefson) ... Skid Row (bassist Rachel Bolan) ... Rush (bassist/ vocalist Geddy Lee)... Guns N' Roses (bassist Duff McKagan)... etc. Most bands bury their bass tracks in the mix... not limited to bands like - Metallica, Scorpions, Slayer, L.A. Guns, Creed, Poison, etc.

Got to see them in '21 for the "A Farewell to Kings" tour, where they covered the entire Rush album of the same name with their own music. The Sword opened for them, both bands were awesome live, but Primus is an experience. Give "Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweakers" a try. For another cool bass setup, give the band "Beyond Creation" a try. Technical Death metal. Try the song "Fundamental Process" or "Omnipresent Perception".

Historically, I’ve always found people argue the top spot between Les Claypool and Geddy Lee. Meanwhile, Les sites Geddy as one of his biggest influences and they’ve been close friends since Primus opened for Rush on tour in the 90s. I missed the show myself, but my best friend went and said it was unbelievable.

While Les did try out for Metallica, it wasn't because he actually wanted to be in the band. He was friends with Kirk Hammet having gone to high school with him and being roommates for a short time afterwards. So he auditioned just for shits and giggles knowing he wasn't a good fit and was just doing it because Kirk was his friend. The other members didn't say he was too weird which is why they didn't take him, that's just what Les says when asked about it.

PLEASE do the studio version! Tom Waits (my favorite man of all time) does the vocals, instead of Les. And I can't ever get anyone to react to Tom Waits... he's an amazing songwriter, he was inducted into The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame by Neil Young several years back, He's been in a ton of movies, including Bram Stoker's Dracula (he played Renfeld), also, The Outsiders, The Book of Eli, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, on and on... the guy has been a legend for like four decades... and he never gets his due.

He doesn't have a brand or a signature bass guitar. Outside of I think 2 fender basses and an electric upright bass, he goes to a man by the name of Carl Thompson. Most, if not all, of his creations are upwards of 10 thousand. The quality, and the fact that they are hand made, definitely makes it worth it, at least to ol Claypool

The bass is usually a bit louder in most of their songs. Their philosophy was "to make the bass the center of the universe" its why the bass has the melody and the guitar is usually quite and soft. Very unique sound from one of the most unique bands ever with 3 of the most talented musicians ever. They are one of my fav bands....a true definition of a "Superband"

As far as bass players go, you have to check out Billy Sheehan, especially with Steve Vai Live!! My next suggestion is for Primus "Too Many Puppies", "The Toys Go Winding Down", and "Mr. Krinkle"!! Thanks for the reactions.

Primus music genre should be called Auctioneering cause everytime Les comes in with his vocals he sounds like an auctioneer lol

Larry Graham was definitely an influence for Les... but I think and feel confident Stanley Clarke was his biggest influence. As a bass player, I think the styles are too similar especially early Primus.

Check out Duo de Twang, Claypool's acoustic side project. Seem em live twice and they've been some of the best shows I've been to.
