On 6 January 1999, Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones held a press conference and photoshoot in the gardens of St James's Palace, having announced that morning that they were engaged to be married. The pair made the cameras wait before allowing them to see the ring on Sophie's hand, and Prince Edward was reluctant to meet the press' requests to see the royal couple kiss. The future Countess of Wessex, meanwhile, was asked how she felt at the prospect of joining the royal family.

I honestly believe Sophie & Edward are in love & happily married because they chose each other & took their time to get married. Curses & pushy royal standards aside, this is how you have an equal, loving marriage. Though I still believe if Charles had a backbone, he wouldn’t have had the issues he did.
