Xtraloveable is the sixth track on the album Hitnrun Phase Two. Four years earlier, however, the track as Extraloveable was released on the stand-alone digital single Extraloveable in 2011, to promote the Welcome 2 Canada Tour beginning two days later. While the recording was new, the track itself was 29 years old.
The original track was recorded on 3 April 1982 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (two days after re-recording Wouldn't You Love To Love Me? and two days before 3 x 2 = 6). The song was considered for inclusion on Vanity 6, but it is not known if a version with vocals by Vanity 6 was recorded. It is possible that the track was worked on further in 1983, as some of the lyrics could be interpreted as referring to Dez Dickerson's departure from the band and Wendy Melvoin's arrival.
In 1988, engineer Chuck Zwicky pulled the track out from the vault and remixed it, telling Prince it should be released. During Prince: A Celebration in June 2000, computer screens at Paisley Park Studios offered names of a selection of tracks which users could vote on for inclusion on Crystal Ball Volume II, and while the track (now known as Xtralovable) was chosen by fans, the project was ultimately abandoned. It is not known whether this version was the same as an earlier version or an alternate recording.
On 4 March 2011, the website drfunkenberry.com reported that Prince was "about to unleash" a "25 minute live version" of Extraloveable (written as Extra Loveable), but nothing more on that alleged version came out eventually and Extraloveable had at that point never been played live, so this may be a live in-studio recording. The version eventually released was a studio version, likely recorded later in 2011, featuring a rap by Andy Allo (who first started performing with Prince in May 2011); the track was likely recorded at Paisley Park Studios, although this is unconfirmed.
Prince stated in a radio interview with Toronto radio station 104.5 CHUM FM (also released as a podcast) that he had three versions of Extraloveable and that they would all eventually be released; he also stated in the interview, however, that the released version was the 1982 recording with some minor tweaks, while it, in fact, appears to be an entirely new recording.
On 19 June 2013, a new version, titled Extraloveable Reloaded, with the rap omitted and horns added, was released on 3rdEyeGirl.com and included two and a half years later as Xtraloveable on Hitnrun Phase Two.
The original 1982 version was not included on 1999 Deluxe in 2019 because of a rape reference in its lyrics and remains unreleased.

when I was combing record stores in the late 80's - this was my absolute favourite unreleased song...this was a perfect transition song from his "Private Joy" buoyancy during Controversy, with some sensibilities that could have been done by the time. If someone asks me my favourite Prince track on the street - very good chance it is this.

I do remember hearing the “r*pe” reference in the original and was like 😟! He HAD to be on one at that moment!
@prn_legacy
@prn_legacy Жыл бұрын
he was strictly against drugs at this stage in his career so i don't think it was that lol, i read online somewhere that the term "r*pe" was thrown around a lot more freely and jokingly back then, despite it not being funny in any circumstances but it was just more socially acceptable in social circles. to avoid controversy i think he decided it was best to keep it shelved.

I think Prince was always changing a lot. Especially like the times is always changing. There’s a reason why most of them are probably demos because he would probably record it again if he actually wanted to release it. Also very true a lot of record companies probably wouldn’t had accepted it at low quality. I think Prince was already testing and trying new things always trying to fit in just like any artist does some you gotta adapt to the ever changing world some.

I wish they would just edit those bits out. I made my own edits on audacity just to have versions I could play around others, and they sound fine. If the estate would smart, they would edit them themselves, then just "leak" them to the internet. Within a year or 2 nearly every prince fan would replace their copy with nice new pristine digital ones. And the questionable lyric versions would become harder to find.

@prn_legacy
@prn_legacy Жыл бұрын
this is satire right? why are you here listening to this song if you dont like it? he wasn't literally taking about raping a girl, it was just a bit more socially acceptable to make jokes about it back then. it does not mean it was a good thing to say, I'm just pointing out that he was merely making a joke and did not actually want to rape someone. "Lust U Always" is another song of his that features the use of that word from the same year, it was just more "acceptable" amongst friends to joke and kid about it. it wasn't released because commercially it wouldn't do well due to those lyrics but that doesn't mean the song isn't good. if i faded/removed/censored that part of the song you would have thought the song is great like everyone else. 1 word in a song doesn't make the whole song bad. you need to relax.
