Hugh Grant settled, reluctantly, because the defendants offered him so much to do so that it was extremely unlikely that if he won the case, his damages would have exceeded their offer. And if they had fallen short by even a penny, then he would have been liable for both sides' costs - because he would have done better to have settled and not wasted valuable court time. Paying both sides' costs would have wiped out anything he won and way more besides, so he simply could not afford to continue. H has presumably refused a similar offer, as it would have been made at the same time, so even if he wins this case, he will lose hugely in financial terms, if his damages fall below any offer he has refused, because he too will have to pay his own costs but also the court costs and the defendant's costs, for insisting that the case continue. And clearly, the judge is losing patience with both sides.

This is also the case in which H was accused, at the end of June, of deliberately destroying evidence that was required for the disclosure process - all of his notes, texts and manuscripts for his stupid book - and ordered by the judge to explain himself, in writing. Apparently he's got until January to settle - the judge isn't going to allow this farce to continue after that, so it will be a trial. I hope this silly little ma-child finally has to face consequences.
