The Duke of Sussex is scheduled to return to the United Kingdom to participate in the WellChild Awards on September 30th. This marks his fourth visit to London this year, where he will present an award and deliver a speech at the annual ceremony that honors children with serious illnesses. However, it is considered unlikely that he will have an opportunity to meet with King Charles, who will be addressing the Scottish Parliament. The monarch is set to speak at the 25th anniversary celebration of Holyrood on September 28 and is anticipated to remain in Scotland for several days following the event.
Since 2007, the Duke has served as a patron of WellChild, an organization dedicated to supporting sick children and their families. He consistently attends the annual award ceremony to engage with the young award recipients backstage. This year, he will present the award for the inspirational child category, which includes children aged four to six. He expressed, “I am once again honored to attend this year’s WellChild Awards, celebrating the remarkable courage and achievements of children living with complex medical needs. These incredible young people, along with the dedicated caregivers, nurses, and professionals who tirelessly support them, inspire us all. It is a true privilege to recognize such extraordinary individuals.”
In his memoir, the Duke referred to the event as always gutting. He became emotional during the 2019 awards while attempting to deliver his speech and later shared that gratitude and sympathy converged when he spotted his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, in the audience and thought of their son, Archie.
The last known meeting between the Duke and his father occurred in February when he traveled from the United States for a brief visit shortly after Buckingham Palace announced the King’s cancer diagnosis. Their time together at Clarence House was limited to approximately 40 minutes. They did not meet during the Duke's return to London in May, despite an invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace. He chose to stay at a hotel instead, with sources indicating security concerns related to the public access points at the palace.
