@@melodiefrances3898 There's some fabrication behind this. By 1974 (When he was 15-16) he was already playing with his band Grand Central in high school so he didn't even have a record contract or was brought to any record label. He was 21 in this performance. Janurary 2x 1980. But it's good to stand out

@Italian Mainer - YASSS, as Morris would say, my man ! You right on it because I was like that myself at that age back then, Prince is not much older than me. But I'm a creole from N'Awlins and people would say u look like him even though I didn't think I did. But I mean I would get a lot of weird people messing with me back then like he did and I was already very shy most of my young life through school up to adulthood. I became even more introverted because of the Freaks messing with me even though I was a straight man, but I don't know why I'm rambling on about this shit. LOL I guess just getting it off my chest cause it pissed me off, but you grow out of it as you get older though like Prince did and interviews became easier for him to handle.

@@damonfordham9803 I had to look up the year to see when we were there as I am 62 now. It was 1980. What I remember most about Prince was how incredibly shy he was when speaking with Dick Clark during the interview process. However, his performance although lipsynced, was completely the opposite. He was brilliant! I loved every minute of it! He was obviously most comfortable when he was performing. I'm sorry, but I had to look up Patrice Rushen. I can't actually remember who we saw that day before or after Prince. You see, they'd tape the shows back to back over the weekend and edit through the week so I never knew who was on before or after the people I most liked and I never caught the shows on TV afterward. Thanks for being interested enough to ask about this, Damon. It's a very fond memory for me.

I remember those years the majority of the men & the women wore their hair like that. I could not get my hands on Prince but later on in my 30s I dated two men at different times of course. Who looked just like Prince and one of them even won a lookalike Contest of the fabulous Purple one the Prince.

Miss you Prince rip

What do you think who took his album photo ? Do you think it was a photographer with a big name? It was taken to WB but his little gf took the photo. The meaning of it to echo in time and to be timeless. I think it happened ! :)) He didn't like his look there.

Prince is such a beautiful soul. He is so kind and loving yet is very so strong in his endeavours, not letting record companies producing his music and doing it himself to have his musical touch and having created thousands of songs and many albums, followed by loads of gigs, though sadly his stunts would catch up to him in the end 😭. His work ethic was like no other in the world. no other in the world. May his soul rest in eternal piece for the beautiful, talented soul that he is. RIP Prince Rogers Nelson. 💜💜💜🕊️🕊️🕊️

yes, and he also said he didn't want Prince back on the show because of the interview... but its also said Prince was irritated because Dick Clark opened the interview dissing MLPS... that music like that doesn't come from there, he took offense.. plus prince was known to be a bit of a smart ass anyway...when you're that talented, his persona was he wasn't taking any shit form anybody.... in fact he had the whole band take on that attitude... thats partially why he was kicked off Rick James's tour

I think he was just shy. The fact that at artist like him was on such a dumb show with all the stupid disco ball effect was probably embarrassing and none of these acts were ever live. They all had to lip sync and play act on the instruments - that in and of itself had to be horrible. Notice there are no wires and this was way before Bluetooth technology. Price was a true genius. I have always loved him.

Theoriginal thinker Of course I’m a huge fan of Prince. That has nothing to do with it however. What I was trying to say was, your comment sounded so sure, like you were there and that it wasn’t embarrassing for Prince. My question to you was basically, how do you know if he was embarrassed or if he wasn’t embarrassed? The comments that keep coming up regarding his behavior on the show is that he was acting so strange and that people were jumping to conclusions that he was already on drugs and just plain strange. So my comment was basically in defense of the fact that just because he’s acting strange doesn’t mean he’s on drugs or anything.

I am reading the book Prince: Inside the music and the mask. I was reading about his first debut on American band stand with host Dick Clark. Before they went on stage the band and prince was in the green room. Prince told his band mates that no one was to speak verbally when Dick Clark ask a questions. He wanted to make a statement. Dick Clark even said this was one of the hardest interviews he had ever done because he could barely get prince to talk.

One of the most talented artists of our time, especially his live shows back around this time, the band and he would jam like crazy, non of this record lype sinc garbage they had to do here. Not only is he seriously talented, but he's always had top musicians in his band, like Dez who could shred his axe with the best of them. All of them unfortunately only really got to show their stuff when they played live. All his records were so tame in comparison. They played a mean rock funk soul groove I haven't heard anyone do since. I like all his music, but imo, this time up to and including purple rain was his best stuff. As much as I loved his music, always thought what an odd duck he was. And in this interview, he was no less odd. But it does seem that the most talented musicians are the weirdest people. Many artistic people in general are odd. Just comes with the territory I guess. Damn, I do miss the late 70's early 80's though. Good times for sure This just makes me want to go back and do it all again.
