This song had to grow on me and now I can't stop playing it.
@Ngasii5 жыл бұрын
Hey guys! Ngasii from TYHN with the context here. I am late as the hell but here goes: Gugulethu is a township in the Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is pronounced goo-goo-leh-too meaning "Our pride" in Zulu (and Xhosa [although it is generally accepted to belong to Zulu as Xhosa has its own word for pride being "Bhongo/Bongo - pronounced bhoh-ngoh.] (snethemba snera, 2019). The singer's name is Indlovukazi which directly translates to "Female Elephant" but contextually means 'Queen' in context (1) - a clan name among Nguni speaking people (2). David said it correctly. Ndloh-vu-kah-zee. The "ndl" sound is pretty much like literally trying to say "d" and "l" at the same time. This will happen when your tongue rises to the roof of your mouth for when you say "d" but instead of releasing the puff of air the generally roles down the center of your tongue, the air the is pushed to either side of the tongue that both feels most natural and sounds the best. The sound you may compare this to is the buzz of an electric shaver but much softer. This song if I am not mistaken is sung in Swati (which is spoken in South Africa and eSwatini [formerly Swaziland which is eSwatini in English]) (,Buthanani Madlavu, 2019) if I am not lying again your first experience of it on the channel and does indeed speak of the life of the township or as it is sometimes called the "location". Historically, the locations were areas created for/by people of colour to keep them out of the gentrified streets of apartheid South Africa and Gugulethu is an example of this. Disclaimer: To all my Swati speaking peeps, please forgive my spelling. Indlovukazi's main refrain or chorus: Safa mnandzi bo (It feels good to be here) 'Ngato ng'phazamisa (don't come bother me) Khona la eGugulethu (here in Gugulethu) Khona la eGugulethu Part of her bridge before returning to the "Gugulethu" hook and then the refrain: Kuyakhipha elokishini Kumnandzi sibumbene Siyasitana s'jabulile Bo makhelwane baya philisana These lyrics speak of how life in the location is amazing (despite what you might think), people are happy, neihbours are neighbourly to each other and the vibe is always up and alive. In many ways the vibe feels better than being in an urbanised town or city because of the people and the spirit of togetherness that they possess. To all Gugulethu residences and locals, and Swati speakers that can add more context, spelling correction or anyone who wants to chip in please feel free and welcome to do so and help paint an accurate picture🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Was this your first 10/10? It's the first I'm seeing but I don't mind one bit🔥 Shout out to Ubunifu Space for continuing to bringing the fire🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Footnotes : (1) Correction on Ndlovukazi context coutersy of Thembinsoki Khumalo, comment given 8 July 2019. (2) Suggestion to amend 'Nguni speakers' courtesy of Brian Dakuse, comment given 8 July 2019.

0:52: Heeey! Ngasii from TYHN with the context. Pro Tip: General rule - if you see "th" coming from South Africa, it is not the sound in English but simply the "t". The "t" on its own would be a hard "t". So Gugulethu (which means "Our Pride" in Zulu) is said 'goo-goo-leh-too'. Just something small for now. I will leave a full comment later.
