I should have been a record executive. I know a hit when I hear it, even if I don't like it. For example: "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" by Shania Twain... I can't stand that record, but the moment I heard it, I knew it was a hit. I felt the same way about Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time." On the flipside, when I heard "When Doves Cry," I shot up out of bed and screamed, "He did it! He's going to be number one!" I knew that song was lightning in a bottle! "Kiss" is a very catchy, radio-friendly song. It has a great melody and a memorable hook - a classic pop tune. In my opinion, Prince was at his best when he kept it simple.

David Z should have given Brownmark credit for involvement in the production process especially according to his memoir " My time in the Purple Kingdom".

Doesn't matter...prince got all the credit for everything

@@Dr.Goldsmithand he should have as Bobby Z said it was technically his song. Brown Mark and others who worked up on their version wasn’t very good IMHO, it sounds like Tom Jones’ version minus Art of Noise. Personally, I don’t like the slowed down version that Mazerati did. Prince definitely took it to another level.

@@Dr.Goldsmith because is his song, what's next? David Z invented the Minneapolis sound? come on.

Wowwwww so no mention of @brownmark?! There is so much missing from this story!!! I was in Mercedeez the female version of Mazarati and was in LA when Mazarati was recording it! This is crazy!!! Let’s not get it twisted Mark made it funky David engineered it! Matter fact those are Mazarati’s background vocals! White folks are a trip! Smh 🤯😒

Prince's Demo had the rhythm already. That song on the demo already sounded like a hit, imo.

To me it seems like Prince took Kiss back after he heard the horrendous lead vocals on the Mazarati version, did them over and kept the background vocal track in the chorus that Mazarati did. Now Brownmark is a prolific bass player asumming he played on half of the Parade album alone but I think it was as is credited. Mazarati sang the background vocals. The Revolution produced it, David Z arranged it. I also think people learn the business of music as they go along. Brownmark was an employee as a member of PaTR. Now i use Discog's and i know there are other sites but i see no writing credits for Brownmark with The Revolution. I do see writing credit for Wendy and Lisa and if there's anything i learned working in corp america is get it on the front end, you will not receive it on the back end so get it in writing. They were given credit for the job that was performed and what they contributed if was needed. Another corp term is the "needs of the business". If Prince thought BM could contribute a better interpretation, I'm sure he would have accepted it at the time so i don't think BM contributed much if anything to Kiss. Also David Z has an extensive paisley park production resume and has worked with countless artist through paisley park productions and paisley park records.100's of songs mind you, go figure.
