If there’s another Wii exclusive movie tie-in game that’s extremely underrated, it’s The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces. It’s made by the Ace Combat devs and based on an anime film, and I’d love to see a retrospective on it. It’s such a unique experience.

You helped make that game? I LOVE that game! You could tell it was built from the ground up with the Wii hardware in mind, and you really wanted to create a unique experience. The visuals were well done as well, including the lighting and the detail of the architecture. And I thought the combat was deeper than it needed to be.

I hear those Rayman 2 soundtracks throughout the video. Starting with what i believe is the Woods of Light, and then the fantastic sneaking music. Here's to hoping that limbless lad gets more attention and good games in the future-- and that Ubisoft as a whole can clean up its act, for both customers and people that work there. Very much appreciate and respect the quick yet decently in-depth look in the PoP series as a whole, and you've got quite a pleasant voice and good script to tell it all. Probably one of the best videos that looked at PoP Wii in general. The platforming mechanics here with making your own hooks and the gusts of wind sound very unique, it's... almost kind of like a customizable platforming track. Instead of a characters innate abilities (like a double jump or a glide), it's an external mechanic that is still directly player-controlled. Very interesting, and I wonder how difficult such a thing would be to implement for other games to take inspiration from PoP Wii I'd argue that the PoP series is actually quite good in combat, but i can only speak for the Sands of Time trilogy and i'm not even an expert. I will say that I think Warrior Within is probably peak of combat in the entire series, for how the Prince's mobility is directly tied into his combat style. Yes, there's a number of different combo strings as most hack-and-slash or character action games do, but though he is not superhuman, the Prince still has many mobility options that can flow *into* further combat moves. Stuff like running up or into walls to then jump at the enemy, over the enemy, and slash, kick or grab them, simply somersault over them, throw a secondary weapon to stun or deal extra damage without endangering yourself but depriving yourself of the dual weapon moveset while returning to a moveset that allows grabs... lots of ways to deal with the enemies, which i think is very cool. There's not many, if any, other games that i can think of that have interwoven combat with platforming this deeply. A game that I think is somewhat similar goes by name of Kya: Dark Lineage. An obscure, also-French-made PS2 exclusive that looks like Rayman's cousin in terms of art direction, but with a rather in-depth combat system like a 3D fighter. No weapons, but there are various combo moves, from punches and uppercuts, to punch/kick mixups,to a variety of different kicks (leg sweep, push kick, double backflip kick, quick low double kick, kick from a jump and groin kick). And positioning gets emphasized as enemies learn what moves you use the most. So you got to bypass their defenses by sidesteps, jumpovers, or jumping *onto* enemies to run them into their friends. Or grab them by their tails to use them as meatshields or spin them around against incoming enemies. Main character is a human, so she isn't the most impressive in terms of abilities. But the game does*have many different forms of platforming throughout: Sliding down boards, skydiving and gliding through updrafts while avoiding obstacles, and riding some vaguely raptor-like animals that have varieties that either jump well or run well (and you can even stand on their back, jump onto a parallel-moving platform, and the animal will keep moving along). Got its jank, but deserves more attention. That all aside, thank you for taking the time to make this video, you got me interested to check out the channel itself. I wish you a good rest of your day, as well as fun on the Rayman DLC! May it bring fun and be a good omen.

Same for me! Maybe it's because I got the whole trilogy on a single DVD, so I had a chance to try WW and T2T at the same time. The combat alone was what made a huge difference. After WW, SoT felt like an inferior older game to me. Also was a teen! Perhaps not angsty enough though, because I found the overly-aggressive metal soundtrack completely out-of-place in WW, and would greatly prefer something more Middle Eastern sounding, like in two other games.

I don't think i've ever encountered a game that mixes movement so deeply with the combat. By way of the wall runs/jumps that could lead into slashes, leg sweeps, grabs, and weapon throws, i mean. And also simply jumping over enemies to reposition oneself. I guess perhaps the original Ratchet and Clank as well as Rayman 3, since avoiding while shooting also has you jumping and running to be succesful. But either way, would love to see more games with combat like Warrior Within.

Jon may not be willing to declare this as the best PoP game, but I 100% am! The way you have to string together the Wii version's unique traversal abilities places its platforming gameplay head and shoulders above the rest of the series. The combat wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad either and I felt the motion controls actually worked to its benefit and gave it quite a bit of depth. It looks fantastic as well and the 60 fps really elevates its look and feel. I rate it ahead of SoT (which is obviously the second best in the series) by a fairly comfortable margin.

the third game in the Sands of Time trilogy, The Two Thrones, has a bit more emphasis on stealth, with QTEs for stealth takedowns. I think you can kind of see the first beats of the basis for Assassin's Creed series there. They could get quite nasty, especially as the Dark Prince. Hanging upside-down from a rafter and using the daggertail (a blade chain weapon with the links looking like flying bird silhouettes) as a strangulation cord is the one i most prominently remember.

I actually have a copy of this game on Wii that I picked up cheap back in 2019 or so and haven't tried yet. Now I really ought to! My history with the PoP series is a bit odd, I remember reading about Sands of Time in Nintendo Power back in the day and thinking it was so cool looking, but never got to play it. Then when I got a PS3 (my family wanted a Blu-ray player and figured the games could be neat too) one of the games we got for it fairly early was PoP '08. So that was my first entry in the series. And while it has some faults I really enjoyed it. I didn't mind the "not dying" mechanic, since it felt like just a streamlining of things - I was already gonna try again if I fell. It was a fairly easy game (aside from that one trophy locked behind a broken combo system, that can die in a fire) but I don't mind that really. The main issues were non-boss combat encounters being bland and somehow both too easy and too hard at the same time, and the giant middle finger thar was the ending. (I know the DLC epilogue explains it somewhat, but I never played it, and since there was never a sequel it's still just kinda left hanging even with the epilogue.) But overall, I honestly have a lot of fond memories of that game. Then much later I finally get to play Sands of Time (unfortunately on the kinda janky PS3 port), and... In some ways I can see it's a better game but it has definitely not aged the greatest in some ways. I still enjoyed it but it was pretty buggy and the combat was more involved than '08's, but somehow more frustrating for it to me. Maybe I just needed to learn it better. But in some ways Forgotten Sands Wii seems like a good middle ground between the two. I like both games for what they are, and this one looks like an excellent addition to the series. Thanks for the recommendation!

@@nikopierrot Interesting, because to me the PS2 and PS3 eras were very distinct, as the PS3 era brought true HD, detailed lighting/shadows and much more realistic shader effects, as well as more detailed open-world games, plus indie games revolution. What was blurry for me is the transition from the PS3 to PS4, and to a lesser extent, PS5: the graphical uplift was less revolutional but more evolutional, and games themselves haven't changed much, plus PS4 and XOne were the first consoles to not outshine the contemporary PCs in graphics and widely regarded as underpowered (especially the VCR Xbox).

Coincidentally I picked up Forgotten Sands for the Wii (and the 2008 PoP reboot on the 360) at a thrift store sale a few weeks back and have been playing Forgotten Sands when I found this video. *I havent actually played a PoP game since Sands Of Time. I don't know about the HD versions, but be forewarned, I consider myself a seasoned gamer and found that the Wii game gets ridiculously challenging, especially near the end of the game when you have to combine all your abilities to traverse the environment. I think that perhaps this game is more difficult than it has any right to be. I agree with GVG when he said that the combat isn't great. The whole game can be a bit on the wonky side to be honest, from the combat to the platforming. I for one am thankful that the game draws a guide line from platform to platform because all too often it can become nearly impossible to gauge your positioning. So any help to compensate for imprecise mechanics is a welcome and almost necessary addition.

I completely and utterly forgot these games existed... Might give the Wii version a go if I ever revisit the series, seems fun enough.

Tomb Raider didn't sit the PS2 generation out though :/ Legend and Anniversary were both built and released for consoles of that generation too

Well...I must have some sort of sixth sense about good games or something like that, because I actually did pick this game up not too long ago. I just looked at it, and also saw that it has the original Prince Of Persia, and I somehow knew to get it. So I'm quite glad to see a vid on this specific game being good. I'll have to get to it.

Yes Jon it is a good game/version it feels like the old days of surprises of hardware/controller focus it's great. Ah unique versions due to hardware. Miss those days. Now it's if you get Switch gyro or not. The hooks are great it may be within range it's great. At what it can do though. Some jumps are awkward sometimes. The Wii is great but the gems are all worth it. :) I was blown away when I picked it up off the shelf and still am even if need to finish it. 2008 I get lost. It uses the Wii so well like Red Steel 2 but cursor then just buttons. Imagine it on PC. It does halt but yeah. The hints are not good at all. But yeah not just PSP/Wii same. Not played the PS3/360 version but the Wii one was interesting. Surprised by Two Thrones even. 2008 reboot was alright. Ah the others hmm. The face not animationg was funny. Yeah I missed the game at the waterfall, then tried again in a new save and yeah it interesting. It's not perfect, sound or combat but yeah it does the job. It can be awkward to beat some enemies. I hoped the boss battles weren't awkward but they were alright surprisingly to learn. The door puzzles and rotation yep it's a joke. The second half is good not finished it but open to. Many modern games don't care to be with small touches of dust, clothes moving, destroying buildings unless it's scripted it's boring these days in gaming But I mean Red Steel, Rayman and Prince of Persia all Ubisoft games I love not their modern stuff. I don't care for Rabbids, or Mario other than oh is it maybe a fair tactics game who knows. Rayman is hostage behind a DLC thanks Ubisoft your Splinter Cell trick on Rayman you can't be serious. Like Ratchet Rift Apart your developer message is lost on me and you lose you publishers Ubisoft and Sony. You lost my respect and your PS5 use case sucked it didn't evolve and I want you to feel bad for making a safe game. Same with Starfield what a piece of loading screens and budget wasted yet No Man's Sky an Indie goes yeah we know how to do that and be a survival game not a space RPG with 7th gen feel. Change your engine and actually make a good video game that feel gameplay wise 9th gen because I haven't seen it and all modern games are trash graphics and story only wasted of space/time of our money and just doing nothing new.

Ahh the times when any new title will have a separate uniquely developed version for the Wii. Those were better than shoddy ports of today's games.

The HD boss fights were pretty terrible, the typical lure the big guy into charging at you to run into a wall, then attack him while he's stunned. But Ubi have gotten rather quiet on the Sands of Time remake as of late.

I havent play some of these titles. But for me the best price of persia gem that i had ever experienced was Prince of Persia the snes version.

Nice video but I stopped at 09:00 due to the spoilers. I bought the game from CEX for £1.50 last month and will play soon. Will rewatch when I'm done.

I feel like this same kind of dynamic happened with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, with the Wii version (and the PS2 and PSP versions, by proxy) is way better than the HD and DS counterparts.
