Prince Siddhartha discovered what “sickness” is through the East Gate.
王子出遊。始出城東門。天帝化作病人。身瘦腹大。倚門壁而喘息。太子問曰。此為何人。其僕曰。病人也。
Prince Siddhartha discovered what is “aging” through the South Gate.
出南城門。天帝復化作老人。頭白背僂。拄杖羸步。太子問曰。此為 何人。其僕曰。老人也。
Prince Siddhartha discovered what is “liberation” through the North Gate. Meeting a shamen
I should look for my path of cultivation as soon as possible. I better not stay in the palace but in the mountain so I can focus on meditation.
於是太子。出北城門。沙門。法服持鉢。 視地而行。太子問曰。此為何人。其僕曰。沙門也。
