I have been visiting Buyukada since 1972. The most striking is the old colonial houses, outstanding architecture of old.. I used to go swimming at the Spa club with my friend Taso, who lived on the Island then.. It is very picturesque and well worth taking your camera. Always negotiate prices on hiring bikes etc as well as the Horse carriages. The Turks have been spoilt by western ways and will get as much as they can for everything. Most people are honest and extremely friendly. Prices are higher than in Istanbul and expect to pay 10 to 15 %more. At the top of the hill about 500 yards from the ferry is a very modern Cafe,, where a lovely cup of cappuccino and some Macaroons is a lovely way to spend watching the harbour and ferries.. It is called BIG Island but in comparison to some others, there is very little to do unless you want a nice Fish restaurant. A morning or afternoon there is sufficient. Still a fabulous place to visit though !.. Oh I forget...there are NO cars but plenty of very cute cats !

@eldercuevas4490 Жыл бұрын
Hola Bery!

The views are stunning! Unfortunately vehicles are forbidden on the islands. Also horse carriages were recently banned. The only way of going all the way up is by foot :( There are some electric carriages for 2 people but they will drop you off below the hill and all people must walk up by foot. @BeryIstanbulTips5 жыл бұрын
Hermosa! Mil abrazos!

The hoarse buggies are not in bad condition, the horses suffer from malnutrition because the owners are poor. It didn’t used to be this way. I think they are banned now, actually. Too many Turks were in an uproar about the suffering of the horses..

Beware of the fish restaurants near the pier if you visit the island. Without exception, they are professional scammers and thieves. The prices on the menu are unclear, and they present you with a handwritten bill showing only the total amount. You could easily end up paying more than $100 for a couple of mediocre dishes.

So, you say don't use the horse carriages "for obvious reasons." What do you think about the situation now? All the horses were rounded up, many killed, because of a supposed disease outbreak. Carriage drivers have no livelihood while all their animals rounded up and kept in a way that they are likely to get diseases.
@BeryIstanbulTips4 жыл бұрын
Is too easy, if they want to get PEOFIT from animals then at least TAKE CARE OF THEM PROPERLY, feed them, give them water and the most important SOME REST in between long working hours ;). They want all the profit without investing money on the horse’s health and check ups 🤷🏻♀️ And I will always state and support this idea: never use an animal for irresponsible touristic purposes because they are all abused. I know about that outbreak, and my heart was broken but every time I go the islands I see them worse and worse even smaller in their size and already pulling heavy carriages full of tourists. That’s why also the government could’ve given support to the horse owners because I’m sure not all have the money to invest in the animal’s health and they all have a family to support and put more regulations in order to use the horses and carriages. And I’m happy for now that the horses cannot be used although just a few were kept just for the tourism after all what they suffered, MORE REGULATIONS MUST BE IMPOSED.
@jshamis4 жыл бұрын
@@BeryIstanbulTips I love animals and hate to see them mistreated. But the characterization of all the carriage drivers on the island as horse abusers is pretty horrible, too. Many of them are...sorry were... Kurds from Eastern Turkey. They still had the culture and the knowledge about how to functionally use horses. Take that away and all you'll have is rich people horse culture, horses kept in stables away from the public. I suspect anti-Kurdish racism also plays into trying to get the public on board against the drivers. Nice video, by the way. It took me back to the island. I've walked and rode a bike around the island many times. Your shots of the horses were also nice. You have some good shots of horses roaming around free. That's illegal now. They rounded them up, killed a hundred right away, and they are still keeping them cramped up in horrible conditions. Meanwhile, the horse drivers lost their way to make a living. Do you prefer no horses to having a few asshole drivers? Couldn't people have worked with the drivers to try to improve conditions without erasing horse carriages?
@jshamis4 жыл бұрын
@@BeryIstanbulTips I'll agree to disagree with you. Sorry to troll you over this. I'm hearing about it from a friend who's lived on the island for many years. I'm a fan of horses and horse carriages. In America there are still quite a few horses pulling carriages. If that trade and knowledge about it disappears, I think the world loses something. Sincerely, nice video. I love the island and I enjoyed watching your video.
