Princess Diana's Solo Visit to New York (1989)

On this day in 1989, Diana, Princess of Wales began a 40-hour tour of New York City. As well as being her first visit to the city as Princess of Wales, it was Diana's first solo visit to America.
While a significant part of the flying visit was dedicated to promoting British fashion with visits to the Rockefeller Centre in Midtown Manhattan, the Princess of Wales also visited the city's Lower East Side. There she was given a tour of a shelter for homeless children.
