On 20 July 1992, Diana, Princess of Wales visited the London Lighthouse, an AIDS clinic in Notting Hill. Having become a high profile supporter of AIDS and HIV charities since the height of the epidemic in the mid-1980s, raising awareness of HIV and AIDS - and breaking down widespread societal prejudice towards the illnesses - was a cause Diana continued to actively support for the rest of her life.
The largest centre for people living with AIDS when it opened, the London Lighthouse served as a living centre and a hospice for those living with HIV and dying of AIDS. The Princess of Wales met a number of staff and residents, and paid a visit to the Lighthouse’s memorial gardens.
