Durru Shehvar, the eldest daughter-in-law of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam of Hyderabad, is remembered for her dedicated social and philanthropic endeavors in the city. Despite being born in Turkey and raised in France, she chose to spend her later years in London after marrying Prince Azam Jah Bahadur, the eldest son of the wealthy Nizam. This union brought together two prestigious Muslim families-the Turkish Caliphate and the Asaf Jahis of Hyderabad.
Princess Durru Shehvar played a pivotal role in introducing modernity to the Nizam's household and actively worked towards the empowerment of women in Hyderabad. Born in 1914 as the only daughter of Abdul Majjid II, the Caliph of Turkey, she received a modern education and martial arts training with the intention of succeeding her father. Her marriage to Prince Azam Jah Bahadur symbolized the convergence of two illustrious lineages, and her legacy is intertwined with her efforts to bring positive change to the lives of women in Hyderabad.
