This is a great and overlooked film. I also love how you cover such diverse types of films, from the hyped-up blockbusters to art house, to anime. What you do on your channel is a rarity on KZbin.

Aidan Beasley I wouldn't say Princess Mononoke is overlooked. It's usually seen as one of Ghibli's best films, along with Spirited Away. The only people who overlook it just don't watch anime.
@aidanbeasley42527 жыл бұрын
Yeah, overlooked isn't the right word to use here. People who have any interest in anime probably know of and like this one. I just meant that for the level of quality that this film is, it should be seen by more people who tend to overlook and dismiss anime.

I just rewatched this last night instead of It's A Wonderful Life with my parents. Can't believe you reviewed it. It's probably my favorite animated film. It's the ultimate Japanese anime, and stands comfortably alongside Disney's Aladdin or The Lion King, imo (originals, of course). Princess Mononoke does strong female characters better than 99% of modern films: San and Eboshi are complex, competent, and intelligently written. I think it's a masterpiece. Anyway, happy holidays to you and yours!

My boo gives such a compelling, pristine details about the movies. She explains in a versatile manner. All I can say is this; she has helped me a lot, and I'll never be able to thank her enough. Just like she's giving you all decorum perspective on movies; she's giving me perspective to hold on to myself, lending my hand while I walk on a wire to that safe place. I love you boo, you are my strength.

Even as a fan of Miyazaki’s work, this film surprised me. I enjoyed it all the way through, but it didn’t quite click for me until I’d left the theater and had some time to think about it. A somber and beautiful film that definitely benefits from multiple viewings

I love mononoke more than spirited away, but I think it's for nostalgia reasons. It was the first studio ghibli and miazaki film I had ever scene. It blew my mind. Still love spirited away, but mononoke has so much heart and vision it speaks to me.

Studio Ghibli (Miyazaki), CoMix (Shenkai), Madhouse (Satoshi Kon) house big names in japanese animated features. You may wanna check Satoshi Kon's works the japanese version of Hitchcock in animated films. "Perfect blue" inspired "Black Swan" or Paprika inspired Nolan with "Inception". Each japanese animation studios have their own artistic styles.

Nice cleavage in the beginning. But then, it kinda hides behind the facade of hair. Kept me on the edge of my seat, throughout the review 7/10.

This was a good review. This is my second favorite studio ghibli film. Lady Eboshi is my favorite character in the movie. My favorite scene is when her troops take on the bigger samurai army and just blast the hell out of them with their cannons.

I plan to see this in the theater in November - it's on my calendar. I debated watching your review since I'm about to watch after a long time. This is my favorite of Miyazaki's ... and I also like the older one Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind - also saw that earlier this year in the theater. I am seeing Mononoke with friends who've never seen it - ooh ahh the anticipation = ) ...the two movies have great imagery I feel and they're great fun to recall and to retell ... "remember when Lord Yuppa boarded the Tomekulan ship... he clung underneath the gunship on approach ...and then he let go and crashed inside the other ship like a human missile" ... ah so good! So very Mad Max Fury Road... mmm (nods head)...

have you seen Nausicaa ..., or Perfect Blue ... The Hidden Fortress, Rashomon (I slipped into Kurosawa there and Satoshi Kon). Akira (1988). Ghost in the Shell (1995), Black Magic M-66 (1987). The Mystery of Rampo (1984) ... I'm going around in circles here (from animated to live action). I saw some of these in theaters. More current: Fate/Stay Heaven's Feel (2020) the third in a trilogy is coming out in 2020, there are a lot of fans of this one, might have to fight for tickets lol. There is a wealth of material, of good cinema in this category.

Did you watch all these Japanese animated movies you have reviewed recently with English dub voices or with the original Japanese audio and English subtitles? Sometimes I find the two to be quite different experiences. Also, sometimes there are more than one dub made for a film, such as Akira, My Neighbor Totoro, etc. Qualities of the dubs vary, naturally, while some prefer not having to read subtitles.

I try to watch them all both subbed and dubbed. It always varies for me on which one I like better.

There is quite a bit of Japanese mythology in this movie. I feel like I can't grasp the depth that he is going into with this movie.

This was a very good review. Personally I think that Miyazaki was harking back to Kaze no tani no naushika (1983). Both have female protagonists that seem to be elevated to a higher plane and being very much in contact with nature and both movies have issues with the way society is treating nature.

Mononoke is my favorite of Miyazaki, although to me Spirited away is like the other side of the medal, because Mononoke is the macroscopic view while Spirited away is the microscopic view. Mononoke focuses on nature vs human, on Gaia vs mankind, while Spirited away focuses on human identity, on adolescence, on the process of becoming a princess mononoke/Ashitaka/Lady Eboshi. In a certain way these movies complete each other.

This was a very beautiful film. Cover a lot of themes dealing with how violence can overtake you and that people and nature should coexist. It's also a more brutul then Spirited Away. I really enjoyed it.

I have huge respect for Miyazaki, but I feel his movies greatly vary in quality, all the way from masterpieces (Princess Mononoke & My Neighbor Totoro) to pretty bad (Howl's Moving Castle).
@123rockfan2 жыл бұрын
I find Princess Mononoke to be quite tedious and preachy in the second half, and it’s a bit too long. But the animation is brilliant and I love the characters.

Now, more than ever, we need such things as movies and movie reviews to provide us with quality albeit temporary relief from the grotesque Trump ordeal we must suffer. Anything anyone can do to chip in. I've been considering starting my own site to critique episodes of NAKED AND AFRAID.
