Yang Guang isn't some diabolical villain. He was just too impatient, and wanted to go through 50 years of progress in 5. Manpower is limited, but he kept overtaxing it without letting the people rest. The Grand Canal would've been praised if Yang Guang had paced the construction better. (and not follow up with 3 consecutive invasions of Goguryeo). But he gets painted as an absolute tyrant who only cares about self indulgence because it would be a better story if the Tang overthrew a disney villain instead of an emperor that badly managed his empire. Yang Guang was an ambitious and hard working emperor, who was too ambitious and headstrong, running his country into the ground. There have been speculations that his failed invasions of Goguryeo was just his 6D chess attempt to drain powerful families of manpower in order to weaken their hold on the empire. And that the powerful families retaliated by fanning the rebellions that led to the demise of the Sui. Also, the peasantry got fed up with his incursions into korea not because they died fighting there, but rather they died on the way there. Peasants were always drafted in order to become logistic support for the main army as 民夫. Everytime Yang Guang decided he wanted to take a vacation in Korea, tens of thousands of peasants were forcibly drafted from their homes, told to march across the country to the north, supplying their own food to probably just die of a random disease or exhaustion before even reaching the army. The peasants really hated this, because if they died in battle, their family would at least receive some kind of compensation. Dying on the way to being drafted as laborer's, or being captured/killed after a loss as a laborer awards their families with nothing, and usually led to the family being ruined. Yang Guang is the classic case of "步子迈大了,容易扯到蛋" - Take strides too far, and you might rip your nuts.

There was no record of female warriors prior to this period except the ones written in old characters 3000 years ago, and have been rediscovered in 20th century.
