Personal thought: i feel rhenys wished to die in this battle for another reason - the bastard son of her husband Corlys. Earlier in the episode we see her meeting him, and later in her conversation with her husband hinting that her presence should not hinder a son of his father's love. I believe she felt her race was run,and it is time to step aside and die in her own terms in battle. The dragon and her rider, the bond was so beautiful. They could have flew away in two occasions, yet the dragon felt her rider's intent and was willing to lay down her life too... beautiful portrayal

It is incredible that Vhagar survived that fall, despite her advanced age, her massive size and her obvious weight, nothing happened to her. The dragon even found the strength to get up immediately after the fall, take flight again and catch Meleys by surprise and kill her along with Rhaenys. What a monster.

I see some folks complaining about vhagar seemingly coming “out of nowhere” despite being the largest dragon. It’s not lazy writing, it’s actually great writing if you pay attention. With Luke, Vhagar waited until luke and his dragon were out of the thick clouds and resting in the open air. Then vhagar comes out of the clouds and with one bite, kills them both. In this scene, Vhagar is waiting on the mountain side behind the castle and just lunges up and grabs Meyles neck. It’s actually brilliant writing bc this was the only way to get the element of surprise bc there was no cloud cover and Vahgar was incapable of hiding in the open air. So Aemend and her, after both dragon's crash, head the opposite way straight to the "finish line" and just wait for Meyles to be flying home and lunges out and again, with one bite, kills them both. Basically, just like the Mountain vs the Viper. All Vhagar/Mountain ever need to do is get close enough to their enemy and its over.

Despite knowing how the battle would end. I still cheered for Meleys and Rhaenys. The head-on with Vhagar, Meleys should've instantly flown up and landed on the back of Vhagar and burn her from behind along with Aemond while Meleys also claws Vhagar's back with her talons. Never attack a bigger dragon head on and then fly beneath, because beneath a big dragon is their big talons, which caught Meleys, and a dragons neck is optimal at craning down to breathe fire. If attacked from behind Vhagar cannot easily crane its neck back and would need to shake of Meleys, but Meleys couldve gripped with her talons so as not to be shaken off. Her talons gripping Vhagar's back could have already seriously injured the green beast. I understand beneath the dragon is also the belly and chest, weak spots, but you need to incapacitate the legs-talon first to land a blow. The back of any flying creature is always its weakest, the blindspot. That's why birds of prey like the eagle attacks from above and catches its prey bird from behind. But, we can't always have it our way, and Meleys crippled Sunfyre and Aegon and gave Vhagar a hard time. Meleys and Rhaenys indeed are ferocious queens. RIP. Advance RIP for Vhagar, and good riddance Aemond. Caraxes and Daemon are coming.

Good blocking to show Meleys dig into Sunfyre's chest with her claw, being almost as big as Sunfyre's entire torso - only to do the same with Vhagar, except Vhagar's torso alone is nearly the size of Meleys. There was a fanmade blender 3d animation of what he thought the battle of rooks rest might look like and to be honest i prefered that in that video meleys and sunfyre were the one locked claws and aegon took a direct hit from meleys fire but aboce chagar swoops from above breathing fire directly at rheanys as she closes her eyes and accepts her fate and vhagar bites of meleys wing off which made more sense to me since the GOT yt had a visual novel type in which was shown rheanys burned to a crisp which was kinda "ironic"? Since bothe her children leanor and beala died to fire and burned to a crisp

Can't say I agree. Meleys and Sunfyre did still lock in midair in this fight, all the while Sunfyre was getting torn apart while Aegon barely avoids getting burned. Meanwhile when Vhagar joins the fight, breathing fire on both, that signals Sunfyres end and the new short battle between Vhagar and Meleys beginning. I much preferred this fight where Meleys, one of the most fearsome dragons, does put up some form of a fight against Vhagar and where we actually get some emotion out of the dragons themselves.

Meleys was already (minorly) injured and tired from the battle with Sunfyre, and after she disengaged with Vhagar she came away from it with at least one broken leg and her wings more tattered. I don't believe Meleys would've chosen to engage over escape.

The two times Meleys looks at Princess Rhaenys broke my heart. The first time she looked at Rhaenys when she injured Vhagar and escaped Vhagar's grip. The 2nd time is when Meleys drew her last breath 💔 while being in the jaw grip of Vhagar. Fortunately She did injure Vhagar, and this does set up a precedent on the battle of Gods eye when Caraxes w/Daemon fights Vhagar w/Aemon. Just a very sad scene 😢

I haven’t read the books. I had no idea what was gonna happen. But the second the background noise went silent, I knew for certain. I will say though, I had one problem with this scene. Rhaenys and meleys are experienced in battle. I’m not sure how much, but they flew at a low altitude over a spot that they had previously used to cover their own approach. I think it was a ridiculously careless strategical approach. Who knows how the fight would have went if they had flown a little bit higher while looking for the world’s largest dragon.

This battle was really intense. I now understood how size difference and longer limbs come into play against dragons. The difference in size between Meleys and Sunfyre wasn't that great, so both could damage each other, well Meleys did the damage but Sunfyre could also reach her. However the difference in size between Meleys and Vhagar was far greater than Meleys and Sunfyre. Meleys was too tiny and agile for Vhagar to even grab or burn and Vhagar was too much larger and had longer legs that Meleys couldn't get close without bringing her entire body closer to Vhagar. Now I understood how Caraxes's long neck gave him advantage.

Ok so a few thing complainers miss. Basically, its (blackout dragonriders + old age => bad timings on Rhaenys => good plan but bad execution => rip) Now heres the details > Meleys is the fastest dragon, but irl physics (which applies to both book and show HotD) u can only fly as fast as squishy pilot (dragon riders) can handle the G-force. > When both vhagar and meleys hooked on each other, thats a very very tight turn and amidst of fires. So their brains overloaded with G force while dragon flames taking most of their oxygen. Im surprised both Rhaenys and Aemond didnt blackout. Or maybe they both did inbetween the cut sequence. Also, after you wake up from your blackout, you have no idea how long time has passed => bad timing. > Vhagar is heavier => force from crashing is A LOT more to her than to Sunfyre, and this force applies to Aemond to. Common sense says Sunfyre fell and didnt get up so why cant same logic to Vhagar? If you dont have speed, u can make that up with lucky anticipation. So thats how Meleys can be beaten even if shes the fastest

Aemond and Vhagar are cheap, honorless fighters. They need the element of surprise because Aemond knows Vhagar is old and slow. She did help conquer the 7 Kingdoms, but I can’t wait to see her go and for Daemon to take out Aemonds other eye.

It breaks my heart that she got caught off by a move she’d used earlier in the fight. You see her fly low over the sea and approach the castle before coming up just before the cliffs.

To have actually watched it unfold on the screen was more riveting and terribly painful than reading it, it was like her child when the life went out of Meley’s it’s like Rhaenys lost the will to live as well. Even if she would have survived, I don’t think she would have recovered from that kind of a loss.
