What a great facility. A place like that is hard to find. The screening process is so important. In most of the material I get, whether it's already "screened" or not, I spend so much time picking out rocks, sticks, dirt clods, etc... Seeing how fine that material was made me really envious.

Thanks George, Just spoke to Tim regarding getting 1 tons of the top soil & sand mixture to do leveling. He was very nice listened to my issues with my grass and was extremally helpful. Since I was in Chicago near Midway Airport and the amount I needed was not enough ,only a yard, he provided an alternative method to get the mix to my house. Rent a pick-up truck from Home Depot about for $20.00 and pick up myself. Great suggestion!! Please keep up the great videos.

I don’t think anyone has made a comprehensive video like this. Bravo. I live in the El Paso where we have sandy soil or straight sand in some cases. We have only a couple good places that do this kind of work but people are often afraid or too shy to ask for the best mixes for our area. I wish they were here in NH. We have 'the dirt doctor' and from my first (and last) 2 yard load of top soil (which I had to hand sift with my DIY 1/4" screener), my yard became infected with pink patch and a white & a black smokey looking fungus within days... 28 years with no problem with such things until I went there... I wound up taking more than 2/3rds of the dirt to my local dump. Thankfully, I didn't put more down on my lawn but just walking around (or my dog walking) spreads it everywhere....

I used to use a lot of Wisconsin-made Purple Cow brand compost in organic veggie garden beds 12yrs ago when it was a relatively new brand. It is very good stuff. I have not read anything about it in a decade, but I believe I remember reading that their compost was inoculated with a microbial culture based on the work of Dr Elain Ingham. I used to also make aerated compost tea with it and had great success. Highly recommend.

Thank you, Mr. George. I was planning an even more ambitious project for my backyard that didn't survive last summer's blistering heat. I killed off the remaining grass (less than 10%) last Autumn and want to cover ~3000 square ft with about 2 to 3 inches of topsoil (I also have a lot of protruding red maple tree roots that need to be covered. Keeping it to 3 inches won't require a local permit). Then when Autumn rolls around, do the planting (I recall your "I FAILED" video for Spring planting so I'm waiting). I doubt if there are any establishments as conscientious as Mr. Collins in my neck of the woods - New Joisey - but I'll shop around. Wish me luck.

This was a great video and very informative . In N FL. we don't have a place like this . Nothing covered only know of one placed that screens it not sure if they do all their soil . They mix this special blend its $ 55 a yard . Regular yellow sand down here is like 350-400 a load 18 yards . Used to work in site prep and drove dump trucks . A 10 wheel dump truck can only haul legally 20 tons most aggregate facility will only load 18 ton so they don't over load you. Most folks sell by the yard on everything if they don't get a full bucket you get ripped off. The place I goto has a bucket that 3x3x3 it's 1 yard so you pretty much get what you pay for but not always. Yes you are right about the bag soil being full of sticks and other clearing debris , also they are full of insects that will eat your plants upThanks for your videos.

A nice, clean, widely-available bagged product is Kellogg's Topper mix. No sand, but lots of fine organic material and compost - no lumps, sticks, garbage etc. My local landscape supply sold me junk with tons of plastic and glass in it - was picking out all the garbage for 6 months (glass shards in a lawn??). i prefer to use compost from a yard waste recycling facility. it is EASIER to move around PLUS the compost provides humic acid which is beneficial to the lawn. the lawn will green up beautifully due to this addition. i also recommend aerating before hand. the aeration holes get filled with the compost improving soil drainage/water penetration. the compost is mosre like a sponge and holds more water than soil so it is a better reservoir for the plant to draw from

It also depends of the soil you have. Where we live it's 1 inch of soil and under is clay. I had to clean a big area of land from clay as much as I could and make a mix of soil with sand, mulch and other stuff to resolve water sitting days in my lawn. This year I'm going to use sand strictly with some peat moss on top to help seeds germinate. Pure soil or mix of soil with sand is not an option... I already have lot of clay, I need to let water dry faster from my lawn.

are you going to core aerate before leveling with sand? those holes will act like mini drains

@@PrincessCutLawnCare aeration was done before the winter. I still see some holes in the ground, so... it should work. But I need to try as is and see how it works :)

There is dirt, and there is soil. 😊 I wish we had such a supplier in the NW VA area. Nearly all have uncovered damp product that is infested with weed seeds from exposure.

Nice video. I ordered a dirt/sand mixture from a different place and it was rather wet and full of small rocks here and there. Certainly not pulverized or screened down to the levels that this place claims (Sand to 1/32" and Soil to 1/4" to 3/8").

I didn't know places like this existed. I've got to do some research. I've been hand mixing bags for the minor level, but wanted to bring the grade up 2 inches across the road. Gotta get researching!

Great video George! can you ask the fella how much shipping to the UK is? 🤣 I've been accumulating bags & bags of top soil from the local big box store (as you call them) and screening to 6mm. Next stage is to get bags of play sand (best option I could find locally) & mix myself. The shipping charges of bulk items in the UK is astronomical at the moment so I decided to go this route. A bulk bag of quality 70/30 material is around £130+ delivered, but if I do the screening/ mixing work myself I think it'll be a chunk cheaper (just hoping the weed free statement on the soil bags is true 🤞). The £120 for the landzie lute was a no brainer though as this isn't going to be a one off job. At least it'll be less work each year.
