Really love how you implemented the hierarchy system in the C:S guides. Many people don't like the grid system which often representing the road hierarchy, but you always made "good grids", a.k.a gird with variety in design, blend functionality with eye-candy and atmosphere. I also believe that the game should add 1-unit wile road in vanilla as local road. Local road IRL can be really narrow, and it can help increasing variety in the cityscape. (Btw, just noticed that you said "road ierarchy" instead of "Hai·archy" in the video. The H in hierarchy is a pronouncing letter rather than a silent letter, at least in English. For the H, I only know that almost every H in French is silent letter, even if it's the first letter of that word.)
@HappyBeezerStudios6 жыл бұрын
1 unit wide and one-way? sounds pretty goood. Also there is nothing wrong about grids. That's how we all remember it from good old Sim City.
@8roomsofelixir6 жыл бұрын
I know, but "breaking the grid" is always a trend among later-stage city simulation game players.
@HappyBeezerStudios6 жыл бұрын
@@8roomsofelixir I try to use both, even had a city where I tried to focus on 60° and 120° angles. For the most naturally grown feeling both will be there. Some parts just change naturally as needed others will be planned beforehand. And it depends what the city should resemble. In the US grids are popular while eurobeat gut more curvy and unorganized layouts.
@nahuelma976 жыл бұрын
HappyBeezerStudios - by Lord_Mogul Yeah, I use the typical grid on SimCity 4, because it's much easier to do that instead of trying to go fancy with diagonals and having the sim engine go crazy with the intersections 😂😂

I really love Cities Skyline and your costruction of the city is very effective, like in the real life, but the huge problem of this game is that lack in personality. You seem to really have a good grasp on how the traffic works, is there any credence to avoiding 4 way intersections? Like Only sticking to 3 ways? I've found my self avoiding 4 way Ints because of my previous experience in the mess that was SimCity(2014). Thank you for your time, and an interesting video :)
@T4rgetGaming6 жыл бұрын
The problem with interchanges are traffic lights, which you get on both 4 and 3 way intersections when using avenues (You can take them out manually thou). So the more intersections, the more segments of road immobilized. The reasoning behind leaving a gap between intersections is so that the tail of a traffic congestion doesn't reach the previous intersection, which can cause traffic in the entire city to stop flowing.
@Thendoril256 жыл бұрын
I see, so the 4 way in an intersection doesnt add another layer of complexity to the lights? Im aware that breaking up road segments too much can lead to congestion, I have a city on 126k population that im pretty satified with but Im wondering if i could do it in a more structured way, while still keeping the feeling of "not all squares". Could i send you a picture of the traffic flow map maybe?
@T4rgetGaming6 жыл бұрын
Sure!
@Thendoril256 жыл бұрын
If theres any questions about the map ill be sure to follow up a bit later today :) As you can see im running a pretty solid cash positive with an ok amount of space still useable for development, but the current level is keeping traffic at a good flow with only two real stoppages caused by Industry around Dean Hights towards the dock north east of Daffodil Hights and the very small on-ramp north of Hickory Hills. i.imgur.com/ZGCVuRd.png
@T4rgetGaming6 жыл бұрын
Seems like a healthy, functional city :) I see some red zones but I think that's pretty normal for a city of that size. That red, highway on-ramp in the middle could probably be fixed with a proper interchange. There's also a big red segment on the northeastern district next to the river that could also be improved. Maybe using one-way roads? Fixing these might get traffic flow to 85%. Other than that it's working pretty well :)

@@T4rgetGaming I understand the cost saving, but not so much the strategy in creating node points in order to manipulate the road placements. Please note that half of the wikipedia page for that road planning is about criticism : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_hierarchy This is typically a very northern american way of taking care of the traffic problem, however you do have a lot of pedestrian paths so I commend you on that. You shouldn't have that many problems if you have efficient public transportation though, and I just like a dense city without too many arteries, making sure that the zoning is as diverse as possible :P However I still don't understand how the city game makers still haven't integrated ground floor shops in the residential buildings. looks good in theory but i can see in practice that the cars mostly ignore your beautiful street design and simply use the shortest route to get where they are going which is unfortunately on your thin single lane roads. Consider building for those AI tendencies when designing roads over considering the aesthetics.
@Robbedem6 жыл бұрын
that's the beauty about the road hierarchy system. Cars can only use the small roads when they remain within the same block. If they want to go to another block, they need to use the collector or artery roads. (that's why it's important to NEVER connect a local road to an artery and make sure you don't connect the collectors all the way through)
