Principles of Scale in Design [Scale Transforms a Room]

The principle of scale matters in design. Changing the scale of items in a room alone can have a major impact on a room. Nobody knows this better than the cinema. In this episode we'll explore some of those cinematic secrets involving scale: from art, to architectural features, from rug size to furniture size. This is stunning. I've been manipulated all these years, and I never knew it!!! Lol. But seriously, what I notice from an audience standpoint is that if these elements weren't scaled like they were, it would not notice the characters interacting with the space. It's so striking how imposing many of the fixtures are, but it totally makes the space work. I just bought a 1600 sq-ft townhouse about 6 months ago, and have had so much fun "nesting" and decorating. Because the downstairs living room is rather small, my first notion was to make the space appear larger by scaling up the main elements (tables, chairs, sofa) and then layering from the middle of the room back up against the walls. I don't know if this was a terribly good design move, and I quite discovered it by accident, but it seems to work. I found a very modern-looking sectional sofa I thought was going to be too big for the room, and I positioned it so that it's sort of its own island within the room. What happened was that it created a walkway behind the sofa which leads to the downstairs powder room (which I think is an ugly decision to have in sight in the middle of your living room, but whatever). So the huge sectional in this small room has actually created a cozy feeling, rather than the space feeling cavernous. Then what I did was I bought a sofa table to put in the walkway just behind the sofa where I can put big plants and whatever in order to take the focus off the ugly powder room door behind the sectional sofa. Also found two huge lanterns I put on opposite sides of my fireplace, and different elevations (one on the floor, and one on a small table) - again, I thought they were going to weigh down the space, but I've found they add so much character and drama to the room without making it feel cramped. My upstairs lounge is next. It's smaller than the living room, so I'm having a lot of fun with it in terms of playing with the scale and figuring out how I want the space to feel. I've lived here for months, and I'm still nowhere near getting this place finished - not sure I even want to actually finish! It's so much fun browsing through the Homegoods store and Tuesday Morning, and when I discover something that fits the house perfectly, I snag it. Anyway, sorry to write a book. This stuff is so much fun. I enjoy making discoveries with how TV homes are decorated and elevated, all the tricks they play with our eyes. It's a lot of fun to also incorporate those discoveries into my own home, even though I really don't know what I'm doing. LOL! Thank you for this video, it's great!!!

You've got it. I fell in love with the inn of White Christmas when I was a child. Then I fell in love with Astaire and Rogers's BWS- Big White Sets. I loe architectural elements and larger scale with less clutter. A challenge to do in a studio apartment.I started to realize that some of the reasons why I loved a movie was because I loved the sets. Thank you.

I really like the way you use computer graphics to do the before and after comparisons! It made me realize that I already have used a sense of scale in furnishing my condo. To break up the open floor plan, I positioned the sofa lengthwise as a room divider to separate the dining area from the living area. And, yes, I have bookcases on one wall and an entertainment center on another, which add interest to those walls and reduce the large scale of the room. So a very thought provoking video! Thank you!

I am obsessed with the architectural residence from the movie, "Mr Peabody and the mermaid" !!! The water feature and courtyard are the stuff of many of my daydreams! The natural setting is beautiful! The 1940's style interiors are my favorite period for design! The second story exterior balcony is a fascinating concept! Can you do an analysis of this cinematic creation please? Is it a real place? I'm crazy in love with it!!!

The a Studio apartment in Rear Window would cost $2,500-$2,800 per month now. One of my favorite interiors is in Auntie Mame. The decoration changes several times and Is period accurate-beautiful sets and coordinating costumes.

Good video. Enlightening. I had to laugh at the "small apartments." My house was built in 1954 in a working-class neighborhood. Nothing in the "small" apartments would fit in my house. These sets were built for the huge Hollywood soundstage.

Great episode Marina!! Was going to ask you if rooms in the sitcoms that you've done are scaled larger to accommodate film crews .The show's rooms appear to me to be smaller .Do your mockups show actual room size? 😎

Yes, they show actual size. Every home I've done has seemed larger than it appeared on TV. I believe a big part of that is due to the fact that we just see scenes in one portion of the house at a time. Rarely does the camera walk us through the home, looking back and forth taking it all in. You know how the camera is said to add 10 lbs. to people? I think with houses it subtracts 1,000 sq ft. On a side note: Often the walls splayed out to accommodate for filming, which makes for a very long 4th wall too.

Some tv homes changed floor plans during the run of their series, example both Andy Taylor’s house and sheriff office, as well as the Stevens’ house on Bewitched to name a couple, don’t get me started on the Cunningham’s Happy Day’s house. So, how do you decide which floor plan to use when they differ?

Is there something wrong with my taste since I prefer the smaller fireplace to the the full wall fireplace in your first computer comparison? I guess after watching the end, I personally don't like full wall stonework for fireplaces. It looks dated to me, but I do think large fireplaces and large mantles look nice.
