Great images as always Ian. Love your choice of three for your wall. I also print my images and sit eagerly at the out tray of my printer to see the print come out. It seems to complete the photography circle.

I purchased a Canon Pro-200 this Spring. Most of the prints I do are 4x6. I don't print every image I make - most aren't keepers - but there are a few good ones every time I go out with the camera. My best images I'll print large and hang on the wall in a frame.

1) Turn your monitor brightness down to about 20 to 30%, and print as bright as possible without blowing the highlights, easy to check in lightroom. 2)Most good quality monitors are good enough in terms of the vaste majority of us hobbyist printers. 3)Don’t buy a sample paper pack if you’re learning to print! It’ll only confuse you. Get the hang of printing on half decent paper, then buy a sample pack. This is my experience. Fabulous video again. Thank you.

Yes although not sure if mine is in % but my monitors brightness goes from 0-100 and i have it set on 20, prints have all been spot on except for once when when i didn't realise for some reason it was set on 50 with no idea how it happened. Images that were for a customer were about 2.5 stops too dark, which i didn't know until going to pick them up from my local printer so now i double check every time i edit images.

I always struggle with the seemingly contradictory inputs with my software (affinity photo 2) the Canon print software and the printer itself which is a Pro-300. I can make lovely prints but just wish the techs would talk to each other!! Great vlog as always Ian

I always enjoy your videos, Ian, but this one was particularly useful for me as I have only just started printing my own images. Can I ask you where you get your mounts and framing done. Do you keep it local. Keep up the good work

I use a cheaper Canon printer which uses compatible inks and I print on bog standard budget matt paper. After a bit of experimentation I find I can get a great print for very little cost. I print to A3 and frame my prints with frames from Ikea and they look great. Friends and neighbours beg them off me and even some of them have them professionally framed, so they can’t be that bad! Yes, the prints might fade over time, but they can be re-printed again for next to nothing. I never have calibrated my monitor, because you can never match monitor + printer exactly, I find a little experimentation is best.

I think it's worth noting that Fotospeed offers free color calibration that matches your printer to your paper of choice. However, living in the US, I have to mail my samples over the pond, and that's a little spendy. Thanks for the quick, yet detailed, video today.

Fantastic summary Ian, many thanks for sharing. Regarding labs, something to consider when choosing one is to take test prints with them, so you can check on how the prints and colors will come out, but also the packaging and delivery. I personally made a painful exercise, where some labs just would deliver prints with nicks, clearly from finishing the print and let the paper fall into a box, or others just not providing the necessary packaging, so that your prints will not survive the handling by the post or other delivery services.

A cost problem with multi-cartridge printers is when they cease to work - and they will, eventually. When this happens you can be left with several hundred ££s worth of ink inventory in part-used cartridges. This happened to me, with an Epson 3800, A2 printer. I mitigated this problem by buying a secondhand Epson 3880, the successor to the 3800. I was able to remove the part-used cartridges from my 3800, wrap them in cling film secured with masking tape, for re-use. That way they don't dry out. The 3880 uses the same cartridges as the 3800 with (as I recall), either just one or two exceptions. The Epson 3880 can be had s/h for very low prices on fleabay or similar. Cartridges ARE expensive if you buy new genuine Epson pigment inks. However, out-of-date cartridges can be had for half price or less, which makes economical inks even better value. I've not found such out-of-date cartridges to have deteriorated in colour or usability. I do not use so-called compatible cartridges. These are my experiences, which may be helpful.

Thanks for all this info, Ian. Just a tip about masking in LR - instead of using a brush mask to cover the entire image, use a gradient mask that starts and ends off to the side, outside the image. That way you're guaranteed to not miss any spots.

Very informative Ian. Due to the current limited amount of prints i do, I use Printspace printers (reccomended by your mate Henry T). The soft proof using their ICC settings certainly make a difference. Do you frame your own or have them done professionally.

Great advice Ian 👍 you say turn screen brightness down for printing. Do you leave it there also for web viewing? Do you edit for web with screen brightness up and then turn down and edit adjust for print? Thanks Nick

When I lived in a flat, I discovered One Vision Imaging in Coventry and had some work printed on aluminium and sealed for outdoor areas. The prints were stunning. Unfortunately I can no longer do this because I live a nomadic life in a van now, along with a million other displaced British men.

I just ordered the Flexi Spot c7 chair. Sadly the Flexi Spot Website in Germany doesn't accept your code! Well I still got it for 70 Euros off! By the way I enjoyed your video, you taught me allot, therefore you have a new subscriber! I need to see if I get that photo paper here in Germany too. I also need to figure out what printer I should get. I have an Epson Printer which can print A3 but it's a less expensive one and it seems there is no way to use color profiles. I don't have much money I can spend, but I also want good prints, so I might need to wait a bit longer to save up for the right printer, but I really would appreciate someones advise on an inexpensive printer, delivering professional results and the ability of using color profiles and maybe cost effective with ink! Thanks allot and greetings from Germany!

Monitors, even Macs, ship out of the box with a color palette designed for web surfing and gaming, which makes them way too bright for accurate color work. I use the X-Rite colorimeter, which has an ambient light sensor that sets the brightness to an ideal level.
@nicedward7544Ай бұрын
Pigment ink lends itself better to matte-lustre and dye lustre-glossy. #1 most important thing IMO is to have a calibrated monitor.

Excellent and helpful video! Making the smaller hard proof prints is simple but economical and effective. I recently started using Entrada Moab fine art paper, and indeed this category of paper is bright! Never had better quality prints matching the original photo so well. I use a canon pro-100. Having the icc profile saved on computer makes a huge difference. My only struggle is setting the print in my computer, given I don't use anything from Adobe nor Capture One. Gimp helps a lot for being free.

The other point with these printers is using it regulaly even if it is just a test printer to save the print heads blocking up which then costs you a ton in ink to fix.
