This is the first part of a printing session where I'm starting a totally new hand mono-print on tissue paper.
It's an atmospheric seascape and I'm putting on the first layers, wet on wet, and adding some 'sunlight', as well as using the butterfly print technique.
I show you how I set up my colours and composition to start and then get printing.
See more at ruthander.co.uk. You can also book onto my last (for this year) live online hand printing workshop on November 27th 2022.

Really enjoying watching, and learning from, your videos Ruth - thankyou for sharing!😄 - can you use these techniques with acrylic paint - guessing if so, it would be necessary to use open acrylics or add something to extend open time 🤔 I don’t have any printing inks or oil paint as such yet…..TIA

Hi, yes you're right acrylics would need to be mixed with a retardant or be 'open' acrylics, as they often dry too quickly to do print from otherwise. However, I have had some participants at workshops use them- they just worked very quickly! I do find the texture and 'stickiness' of either printmaking inks (relief or block printing) or oil paints easier to deal with though.

@@printingathomewithruthande1868 Perhaps I should invest in a few colours of printmaking inks to try them out and compare - thankyou Ruth 🙂

Hi. I've watched many of your videos and I love your work. Just one question, I know you use oil paint to print with, I was wondering if it can have a detrimental effect on tissue over time or if you've had no problems. Thanks for all your inspiration!

Hi Pauline. No I haven't had any detrimental effects as yet (I've been printing on tissue for about 20 years now), though I think of it like fabric or textiles- eventually it will disintegrate. I believe the most damage comes from exposure to air, so I wrap my unframed things as soon as possible if they aren't framed, and, if framed, make sure they are sealing from the air completely.

What are you putting the ink on?

Hi Kathy, I roll the ink onto a large piece of plastic perspex that covers my desk (I know it's a bit difficult to see in the videos)
