I dove this wreck back in October of 2003. One of the two stern shaft propellers had already been sent back to Germany by then. This was my first and only NAZI shipwreck dive and it was breathtaking.👍🏻

@JadeYueRyu18 жыл бұрын
It is. However, there is a large precedent for military bases to allow families of staff to either visit or live on base. In fact many military bases have their own school systems for precisely this reason. Our main base in Japan is a good example and it is classified as a private military zone.
@WildBillCox1310 жыл бұрын
Forgive my possible gaffe, but calling the Eugen a "Nazi" ship is like calling the "USS Ronald Reagan" a "Republican" ship . . . which it is not, political jokes aside. Eugen was a German ship, deployed by the Kriegsmarine, a notoriously non-nazi clique. The individual sailors serving on her might be Nazis-or they might not. Their nationalism was, in the main, motivated by German ideals, not specifically Nazi ones. Also, a great post and I quite enjoyed it.
@BlueWorldTV10 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Commanded by the Nazis during WW II, involved in the sinking of the HMS Hood, while commanded by the Nazis in WW II. Surrendered to the Allies at the end of WW II--by the defeated Nazis--as part of the surrender agreement. Exactly what part of it being a Nazi ship is in dispute? Revisionist history. Not calling it a Nazi ship is a stretch.
@RenegadeSamurai8 жыл бұрын

You should come to Newfoundland and Labrador I think you would enjoy it as in the summer months we have hundreds and hundreds of whales come here and there is an estimated 8,000 shipwrecks on the sea floor around Newfoundland and Labrador. While many of the submerged vessels succumbed to perilous ice and storms, four were victims of German U-boats during World War II. Of those, the SS Lord Strathcona, located in Conception Bay near Bell Island, is just 89 feet from the surface and the most accessible. With visibility here at 80 to 100 feet, torpedo holes and other features are easy to see.
@BlueWorldTV10 жыл бұрын
spiritsofhell I have heard amazing things about diving in Newfoundland! I want to be there when a Narwhal shows up near an iceberg. How often does that happen?
@spiritsofhell10 жыл бұрын

I spent 3 weeks at Kwaj as a communications contractor back about 2003. I did some skin diving on my days off, but I wanted to ask how they let you on Kwaj??? I had to have "orders" that let me on the atoll. If not you have to stay on the plane until it gets to Guam. Plus, I don't remember the German ship. Was that out by the airport end of Kwaj?
@BlueWorldTV6 жыл бұрын
We did a big film project there and had special permission from the Army to dive there. One of the guys on the film crew worked on Kwaj as a contractor for Raytheon, and he made the whole thing happen. It's tricky. Here's the film we made, you can watch it on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Silent-Wrecks-Kwajalein-Atoll/dp/B000G7P8AE

A very interesting video. One small correction. The Prinz Eugen was not surrendered to the Americans. It ended the war in Copenhagen harbour and was surrendered to the British. The British, the Soviets and the Americans drew lots for the German Navy surface ships which survived the war. It was as a result of that that the Prinz Eugen ended up with the Americans. The article on the Prinz Eugen in Wikiepedia reports that “The guns from turret Anton were removed while in Philadelphia in February (1946).” I wonder what happened to them.
@BlueWorldTV7 жыл бұрын
That is true, but was more detail than was required in our story.
@whiteheatherclub7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but all you needed to say was 'given to the Americans' rather than 'surrendered to the Americans'. It's just a case of accuracy rather than great detail.

Air burst didn't do much critical damage to any warship, close or far away. The underwater test was however. The U.S.S. _Nevada_ was about 1km. away on the first test, and about as far as _Prinz Eugen_ on the second. It was towed to Pearl Harbor, then offshore, and sunk for target practice.
