Look amazing-yes I entirely agree-it would be disrespectful of the animal and the furrier who made the piece to burn it and utterly stupid to replace it with plastic!!

I have said before and will say again... How wonderful it would be to see Isabel's collection of historic clothing closet. Cannot imagine how vast a 'closet' it must take to store so typically volumeless fashion and all those hats! About the fur. I once had an amazing fur coat. Truly authentic from the 1960s. Made for my mother to withstand winter daily playground duty in Alaskan winters. A combination of furs; seal skin tanned with urine and chewed to soften by native women. Other seal and polar bear small decoration with felt at hems. Wolf trim around hood and cuffs to block biting winds driving snow. I was absolutely thrilled to the gills my mother gave it to me with its mukluks. Also sad because it was around the time fur was getting heavily frowned upon, hardly dared to wear it and only when in company it be understood. Biggest worry was the obvious stunning seal with hunting them now severely restricted to very few native peoples. I for one am very happy to see that stunning capelet and OMG that muff! worn, treasures worthy of being seen. And especially by people who would never have a chance to see.

Very well said, I agree that this fashion should be available for all to see. Such eloquence and fashionable flamboyance that can hardly be compared to styles now. All to do now but pray for the resurgence of enthusiasts involved in one of the golden ages of general moral virtue and fashion.

I must admit, I'm in high distress right now: I, for the love of, just can't decide what I like more! At first there was this wonderful fur pieces, then detailes on the coat's bodice and sleeves, then bodice of the dress, killing comfort dress, little bows and amazing beret! How can anyone choose?) And, must admit, never saw fan lacing - looks fun to use. Thank you for the video)

My first ever job was at a dry cleaners in Florida that had a fur storage vault. I loved going in there even though most people never came to check out their fur, but their estates kept paying the bills. Unfortunately in Florida, fur doesn't last long without being kept in a walk-in freezer. My elderly coworker had worked there 40 years and told me stories about some of the coats (which i have since forgotten in the last 25 years)

Before my mom moved from up north to Florida, she had to do a quick purge before packing her stuff for the move (her house sold very quickly). A few years earlier, she had inherited a full-length mink coat from her godmother which she only used a few times. She knew she’d never need it in FL, so she decided to put it in the middle of a box of clothes headed to charity. I would have loved to see the face of the worker at the store who was sorting through the donations that day!

My favorites here were the redingote with the beautiful sleeve detailing and oak embellishment, and also the plaid day dress with the bodice detailing. Two new goals for me, thank you! Also, thank you for a glimpse at those beautiful furs; I have some that need re-lining, you’ve given me a bit of courage to give it a go.

Especially without modern heating that can keep the whole house around the same temperature. You wanted and needed those layers to stay warm and comfortable. Later, when the crinoline came into fashion, it was very helpful to be able to hold out those skirts without needing the many layers of petticoats in warmer weather. Women had more control over ladies fashion back then and it was a way for them to be creative, but they were also smart.

I live in Colorado and every winter the Arctic Express blows down from Canada with temps in the -15 F. I have plenty of modern down coats to keep me warm. However, I inherited a full length farmed mink coat and goose down doesn’t hold a candle to fur in terms of true warmth and wind chill protection. Honestly, I was surprised the first time I wore it. And yes, during the summer it has to go into cold storage and be maintained to keep the skin from drying out and shedding the fur. But it is an investment worth caring for. It’s now keeping a second generation toasty. Thank you for your practical comments about reusing vintage furs.

A busk question: I can see would be useful (irreplaceable?) to keep the corset from runching up and wouldn’t be uncomforable if you have perfect posture, but what if one’s stomach is not as flat as yours? Does it stop at the waist? does it turn a muffin top into 2,half muffins. Or what? I appreciated learning how mutton top sleeves keep their puff! And loved the close-ups of the beautiful stitching on the petticoats and the amazing pleating in the coat sleeves and day dress.
@josephinedykstra3383
@josephinedykstra3383 4 күн бұрын
I've made one of these, and have far from perfect posture and a round stomach. The busk does keep me from slouching (and is a bit uncomfortable driving), but if it's fit well, everything is compressed with maybe a muffin bottom? puffing out the chemise a bit below the stays; think of the effect of compression leggings before they ride down. The rest of the stays are heavy enough that you don't see bulging around the busk

It's because of my concern for animal wellbeing that I prefer real leather and, though I don't have a reason to own any, fur. While yes, it does require the death of an animal, it prevents introducing more microplastics into nature, hurting more animals for a longer period of time. Plus, over the life of a good leather item, you would dispose of multiple synthetic items. I'm eager to see how other bio-leathers advance (such as mushroom-based leathers), but unfortunately there don't seem to be any viable replacements for leather that don't require plastic.
@priorattire
@priorattire 2 күн бұрын
Absolutely. That is the reason why I stick to natural fibres everywhere as far as possible. Wool and linen especially, ditto leather ( I am not a vegetarian and I think it would be hypocrisy to eat an animal but not to make good use of all the other produce, honouring it. More sustainable, more environmentally friendly and more durable. My wooden jumpers and leggings serve me years after the cheap polyesters rags are disposed somewhere in the middle of the ocean, to the detriment of all the life around it.
@YamiTami

not to mention that the majority of available hide is a byproduct. if the beef industry ever dies then there might be the question of where the leather comes from (the same way veal going out of fashion meant the cheese industry switched to alternative rennet). But right now cow leather is going to exist whether or not people use it. The question is if we use it, or if it goes to the landfill to be shortly joined by the plastic that replaced it

I see zero problem with using old fur. It is better that it be used to stay warm and make an animal's death worth it rather than have it tossed in a dumpster! I found a very old men's Ushanka winter hat in an antique store - bear fur, I believe?. It looks somewhat hilarious with my braids, and very much not in any lady's fashion whatsoever. But y'know what? My head is warm. I live in northern Canada and that hate is one of the toastiest things I've ever been out in. I paid very little for it and it is absolutely lovely for warmth.

Try a freezer, works for both wool and fur [used to do re-enactment], a friend had an empty freezer she stored everything in because they are bug proof, after wearing put it in her own freezer for 48 hours to kill any insects that might have landed/laid eggs or whatever while it was in use - and moths go for wool like cats go for catnip - then carefully wrapped them in special tissue and kept them in the old freezer with dried lavender and cedar chips to keep them smelling nice.

I was sorry to see an influencer like yourself wearing fur, even antique or vintage fur. I agree it should be conserved and maybe even worn, but I worry that there is not enough to go around and some would do to real live fresh-killed animals. I know the fur industry has not gone away but I think it should. I would prefer to have seen you display the real thing but wear the artificial to show that it has gotten quite convincing. Which I think it has. I see from the other comments that I am the minority, but perhaps you and the will reconsider.😢

The markets for antique and new fur are just completely different. There is plenty of antique fur to go round. I see it in second hand and charity shops constantly for very cheap prices. I would love a stole for my vintage outfits but it takes up a lot of space and takes effort to care for and keep moths away. I know a few people who wear it and they either inherited it or found it in a charity shop for a few quid. None would ever wear new fur unless it was rabbit fur which is a by product. There aren't many people into historical and pre-1950s fashion where I live so even if we all bought a vintage fur coat each, there'd still be some left in charity shops. It's a material whose environmental impact was made decades ago and it can be passed down for generations if it's looked after so I see no reason why existing fur should languish until it rots while people buy synthetic fur which is absolutely terrible for the planet and looks horrible after a few years. New fur is a different kettle of fish. I've never even seen a new fur shop in the UK. Fur farming is banned here and hopefully it's import will be banned one day. Even if fur came back into fashion the market would barely expand due to the cost and ethics. I work with high net worth individuals and the only ones who ever wear new fur are chinese/russian multimillionaires. They wear it as a wealth signifier and frankly they always look ridiculous walking out of a heated car into a heated building where they immediately take off their fancy coat.
