I sadly think Will is right. AI will get much better VERY quickly. For a established artists it’s taking jobs but for a beginning artist it’s taking away dreams. I keep telling myself that I’m learning to draw for myself and for the books I have in my head. AI can’t make what I can. So bring on the Self Publishing course ASAP please ;-) I love SVS thanks for being there for us!

Gotta say that this is, by far, the best podcast out there! The exquisite combination of the three of them, with their obvious differences and own nuances, different ways of seeing the world and their own path and how they explain their goals, yet perfectly housed in their warm friendship and acceptance of each other, makes it a real joy to watch. As ever, I'm so proud to be a SVS student and under these guy's guidance. I wish you all three, and all my fellow subscribers, truly the very best for 2024.

I think you are both right about AI. 🥪 I think the main crowd of people who keep using it over and over do want that hyper realistic stuff, and also thats probably easier for AI because the data bank is larger. But you can prompt things like, Posca illustration, or watercolor and get those to populate successfully so it’s out there. I personally have aphantasia, which makes seeing visual images in my head incredibly difficult so I’ve used AI to help me visualize a concept I have that I then use in conjunction with other reference photos and it helps get me build out that visual in my head. I really appreciated you calling that out as being “ok” because I feel like a “bad” artist when I get stuck and go that route. It’s always reference, not replicating but still, there are a lot of artists that shame for that.

Coincidentally, I learned to write and draw with my left hand, cos I had a mini stroke a few years ago where I lost all strength and sensation of the right side of my body for about 10 minutes. That episode terrified me, especially knowing that I wouldn't be able to draw if it happened again unless I can use my left hand.

I think Lee is right about AI. From the time that it first came on the scene, it has only become more recognizable because of its shared attributes. I feel like he is right when he says the average person is the one who is driving its development. Not illustrators. I have never seen any AI that looks hand drawn or organic like the popular styles of children’s book illustration that are out there. I think the current AI is a style in itself. I think it works well for fantasy type art. But it doesn’t even translate to children’s book illustration. It’s like in a whole other category unto itself and I can spot it from a mile away.

Noooooo! @Jake! Don’t let Lee teach you how to say niche wrong! It’s been killing me anytime Lee or Will say it over all the years of the podcast. You speak well, don’t let him push you into saying it wrong. Lee it sounds like your saying Nietzsche! Side note, massive thank you for the brilliant niche podcast I have greatly benefitted from despite the niche itch 🤖

Will's answer about his goals is so good and important to mention, I think. Your mental end physical health absolutely play a role in getting you to the place where you can achieve your career goals! I learnt that last year and will continue eating healthy and getting fit so that my brain can function in peak condition. I just had to comment, because my partner and I are also making a game this year! I'm excited to hear more about your game as you go along, Will. Hope you will be sharing the journey as you did with Pickleball Paul. It's so motivating. 🤖 Oh boy, I think Will gets the sandwich - AI will just get better, but Lee does make a good point, just not one I think will ultimately determine the direction of AI. 🥪

I'll have to agree with Will on the AI thing for two reasons: 1) The amateurs click a button and post. The creative types will photobash, filter, trace, or simply "steal" the composition, perspective, or lighting and draw over it. You can easily identify the click and post art but can't identify the works that are propped up by AI. 2) The public, including clients, can't tell the difference or don't care because of cost savings. Popular (profitable) art, music, books etc. require a lowest common denominator approach by definition, and advances in AI will certainly be able to achieve that. Turnaround times will shrink and trained artists will be forced to integrate AI into their workflow whether they want to or not. it's difficult to know what these artists are adding to AI's algorithms by using it. There's a great incentive to omit any mention of AI in their work.

In terms of valuing art, this might seem like a non sequitur, but before the printing press and digital information distribution, civilisations globally relied heavily on art, and the arts in general as mnemonic devices to retain vast amounts of non written knowledge. Illustrated medieval manuscripts are a good case study. When the average person had to rely on libraries or schools to access books, the fact that illustration was far more common place, meant that their limited time with the material was much more effective. The association between information and imagery made recall easier. Dr. Lynne Kelly’s books Memory Code (the history of these techniques), and Memory Craft (modern application of these techniques), go into great detail describing how the human brain naturally memorises, incorporating the five senses, and how art greatly enhances the ability to retain and recall information. I recommend her TED talk for a synopsis. So just to add, if we put all our eggs in one basket, and rely too heavily on digital records… All it’s gonna take is one big solar flare 😬

I absolutely think Will is correct. I wish it wasn't reality, but I think it is. I have already seen AI generated art that looks like watercolor, rough sketches, pen and ink, color pencil, etc. Yes AI has problems with certain features, but it won't be that way for long. It will improve at a ridiculous rate. In knowledgeable hands, it will create images that are indistinguishable from human created images. People say it will always be inferior because it lacks the human touch. The human touch is there. The input/prompt is the human ingredient. Sadly, even if governments made AI generated content (music, images, video) totally illegal right now, I think it's too late. It's out there now, you can't stuff it back in the box. I really hate it and I don't know what the solution is. Although, someone (Lee possibly or one your guests) at some point mentioned how working traditionally (not digitally/with physical media) gave them originals to sell. The value of traditionally created originals could possibly skyrocket. At least until someone hooks one of these AI monsters up to a robotic arm that can work a paintbrush. ;)

I feel that Lee's right with the AI art direction. Also, I think that people who either appreciate and/or commission illustration will eventually realise that they will be destroying their own industry (e.g. children's book illustration) by using AI art over an illustrator. Their product will immediately become the bargain bin junk that is not marketable. However, it is important for us artists and illustrators to keep reminding the world that AI art is stolen are and the individuals who use AI are the true failures in the art world.

The only way we will ever be able to circumvent AI generated art is by insisting on original traditional art whenever we buy art. Of course we should be able to make it affordable by making quality prints, but the original work should stand as the foundation. I’m curious about Lee’s stationary project, will you be sharing images with us to see your progress? Also, Will, those cards from Amazon will be difficult to work with. I would much rather do the art, print it out and then cut the cards myself. You can even round the corners with corner punchers if you want. As always, your podcast stands head and shoulders above all others.

AI is here to stay, so they question artists need to be asking themselves is how do I adapt so that I can continue to make a decent living in this new environment. Those who really want it will explore the many opportunities that are out there, while others will flounder if they refuse adjust the way they work to compensate for the changes in the publishing and art worlds. If we learned anything from the pandemic, it's that you never know when a major change is coming that could affect your work/business. Those who refused to let that keep them down adapted and flourished, others unfortunately closed. What we sometimes forget is that there are over 8 billion unique people on this earth. 8 B I L L I O N. I think that gives those of willing to do the work enough of an audience to find our 1,000 fans willing to spend a $100 on our work each year, don't you think? Or am I over-simplifying? 🥪🤖

🤖🥪 Always entertaining! Thanks guys. I'm an event artist, drawing portraits with different media(trad), and cutting silhouettes of people with scissors only, no sketch. I think AI is pretty far away from anywhere near what we do at events, because the biggest part of the experience is the human to human interaction. However,...somebody will probably try it.
