What a quote! 'Certainly Steven is one of the biggest arseholes in terms of a human being' Priceless, love him and The Smiths, the world is a little bit better because of them both.

This confirms what I've always suspected: that, although Marr provided the harmonic structures for the Smiths' songs, Morrissey came up with the melodic lines (i.e. he didn't just write the lyrics).

Very true. Similar to REM and Stipe. He wrote all the lyrics AND the vocal melodies.

Hand in Glove was actually their debut single released in May 1983. It didn't chart. This Charming Man (October, May '83) reached 25 on the UK Singles Chart. What is really mind blowing is that the Smiths never had a number one hit, Morrisey didn't either, nor did chart until the re-release of Unknown Pleasures in 2019 at the 5th spot on the Uk Album Chart. New Order never had a number 1 single in the Uk but made the top 40s 27 times. They did have 7 Top 10 albums. Think of all those one hit wonders (some very good) and songs we have almost totally forgotten who did and you just know that the Music Industry, like the Film Industry, has several screws lose somewhere.

I don't want to sound pretentious, but after listening over and over to all their songs as a true fan, I'd rather point out the following song making method that made the band so unique: The lyrics with motifs such as despair, hopelessness, sexual frustration, and alienation are contrasted with Marr's often playful and cheerful guitar melodies. First, you hear a nice melody with decent singing, then you are in awe of the lyric content, which is exaggerated to the point that it seems absurd and witty. "I really had a bad dream, it lasted 20 years (!), seven months and 27 (wtf?) days"😂 What a mind-blowing creativeness in songwriting! People who just don't pay much attention when listening to the Smiths often miss that. The Smiths required some effort to be understood, more demanding listeners, and that's why they never hit the top spots in the charts. They were a pop band with the message that should, unlike other pop acts, raise the level of consciousness and make people aware of the world and society they live in. There are other ingredients, like Marr's unique guitar playing, Morrissey's singing style, a slight gay profile of the rock band unusual for that time...also creative synergy between Mozz and Marr is crucial. None of them have achieved as much separately as in the Smiths. Even though Morrissey has had some successful albums since the breakup, they cannot match those of the Smiths in terms of quality.

their image might have been influenced by the Mondays (it was leather trousers and hair gel initially) , but definitely not the music
@theselector47334 жыл бұрын
Well to be fair he said they only copied "This Rolling Rhythm". Which is kind of true. The Madchester drum pattern was fairly similar with all the bands. It was basically a slowed down version of early house music rhythms.
