Prison Architect Tutorial - Prison Architect Tips - 101

As an already advanced warden, I recommend you to not pause time at the beginning when your cashflow is green, because it gives you 800 extra a day and will spare you some time, especially when building a large prison from scratch. Also if you build a shower just put the drains at the entrance instead. I tend to not build showers blocks at all anymore and instead build bigger cells with a few more things to keep the prisoners happier (=less riots, less stabbing, etc...) including a shower in every cell so they can do that anytime they have the need to from their cell. Also with the newest update make sure to not only build fences but put barbed wire on them, or surround the yard with buildings entirely, because the prisoners love to climb fences.... (-> that gives me quite the headache lately when building 300 x 300 prisons.... Btw you only need 1 sink per kitchen from my experience. Instead build more cookers and fridges (approx. 2:1 for 2 cooks supplying maybe about 10 Prisoners). Important: If you are going to utilize a holding cell you definitely need bunk beds too or the prisoners will start rioting after a short amount of time! To make things easier and quicker use „Quick build“. Most often I use „clone“. I build and furnish 1 room and then copy that for the rest. Dont forget to add sprinklers! Dont be that person who looses a complete save because he forgot to add a few sprinklers. To increase the happiness of prisoners of a cell (and the cell rating) put a window in every cell, especially if the cell window would grant them a view on outside. (Cell grading can be found and checked in the Logistics tab => needs to be unlocked over bureaucracy). Maybe I should do a tutorial too xD Dont unlock „Legal“ at the beginning. That is the last thing I usually unlock because its expensive and you can use the money better for other stuff. For the infirmary its actually enough to have a cramped infirmary with 5 beds ad 2 morgue slabs. (I usually build the morgue and infirmary in one room.) There are still a few things that I havent mentioned here. For example that your prison is easy to escape from. I would change that with perimeter walls surrounding the entire prison, road blocks for the roads and the „deployment“ tab where you can set the entrance to be staff only so that the prisoners dont just walk out the front door.

@@videogamearchitect7462 Thanks, I find playthroughs of this game both entertaining and professionally interesting as I watch people make "their" version of a prison. I'm no expert, but being a prison officer makes me think about the game in a different way. There are plenty of potential or missing features from the game which may seem minor, but as someone whose job it is to ensure a regime runs smoothly, is incredibly frustrating. Although having said that I understand that there are limitations of a video game, and I am very impressed and happy that we can get a prison management simulation game this ambitious.

super great tutorial! just a tip: for economy reasons, you don't have to put the drains beneath each shower head in the shower room, just add a couple at the (door) opening to close off the shower room so the water doesn't get beyond that - it will as well drain the whole shower room automatically. You can place drains , if you want, beneath shower heads for individual showers in a cell so it doesn't actually flood the whole cell. and for early money boost, just cut some trees and sell or export them

This it technically inefficient and efficient depending on out look it is inefficient from financial outlay as you say but any tile with water on it has a higher cleaning requirement for janitorial staff dropping environment modifier dealt with by prisoners with a cleaning cupboard but for higher security most likely keeping your paid janitor doing more so you may loose more money from needing more janitors I have no exact numbers on this but both methods have positives and negatives =)

If I may add a suggestion: leave the game running while you're planning so that you can make some extra money. As long as you aren't taking in prisoners, you can't go into the negative until you hire an accountant, so it's better to keep that daily income coming in.

Another really good tip is to build in a jungle area. Since, you can cut down the many trees in the jungle and get tons of money from selling the logs. That in a large area means at least 50,000+ extra money or so.

Man, I'm having so much trouble with this game. I start a prison and it'll day the prisoners have no access to a canteen. Then the kitchen doesn't have access. Cant build a yard cause it has to be behind at least one door. I added like ten doors

I could be because your individual rooms are inside the door if so you need to remove the room Inside of the door

This sounds like a bug that happens when you don't have your entire perimeter secured! Make sure you go around your prison and make sure that there are absolutely no holes in your fence and that should fix the issue if everything else is built properly! Hope this helps man, let me know!

Tip to others, that intake area that was built in this video is not up to snuff. I did the same thing and noticed that the prisoners were going to delivers, not that area. So i tried to build a reception but because that area wasn't built as a closed room initially, i couldn't assign it as reception. So make sure you build a fully enclosed building, THEN put doors on either end.

Did you do the campaign? I found that really useful in terms of learning how to play the game because it gives you a to-do list and explains what to do in bite-size chunks, whilst also having a semi-interesting story line and some cool art :)

One ULTIMATE tips extend your cables to the edge of the map, leave one meter, then another cable for new generator Building area must as clean possible from the cables, save you pain moving them when need land to buold but mist connect to new generator And if possible don't overlap cables and pipes, cause moving cable meaning demolish old line, that will demolish overlapping pipes too

I recognize this is a year old already, but this is really bugging me. When you build showers you only need to place the drain in the entrances of the shower to block water from flooding out. There is no reason to have 10+ drains in one shower.

I have to say, I really enjoy your video's, learning a lot. I am having a problem, and wonder if you have ever ran into it. You lay out some foundations, the workers start to build them, then all of a sudden they stop and never go back to it. I have tried everything and nothing is working. I end up having to destroy the room and trying to start over. Does this when I do quick build and / or lay foundations first. Hope this makes sense.

Hmmmmm, this sounds like there is no entrance placed on the foundation anywhere? Building the original foundation should be pretty simple, just click and drag, once you release, MAKE SURE that you add an entrance (cell door, staff door ect.) somewhere and they should complete the building right up! I do have a ? to ask concerning 'planning' in Prison Architect. That is how to I rotate objects when I using the planning mode option? I know it's a silly ?, but I haven't played it in a while so I'm kinda rusty at it lol.

Lol good eye man! One of the few people to point this out, my biggest mistake that continues in these first few videos as well hahaha. I'm honestly shocked that the prison ran so smooth without one that I didn't even notice until i was deeper into the game. I spent a solid hour and change without realizing my error hahaha. ill probably have a double fence/wall so if my inmates get past there cell walls they also have to get through the second wall/fence

If you space the two fences apart by like 14 tiles it prevents them throwing stuff over the fence

Im building a giant city, fully functional, roads, Arcades, Café(s) Diner, Cafeteria/Canteen, Restaurant(s) Hotels, Apartments, Utility Room(s), Armoury (For Emergencies) Guards just like Police cars, Parks/Yards, and a Storage along with Staff rooms, Mayor (Warden), Deliveries, Security, Offices, Etc. Oh and showers.
