Whatever reasons behind the scenes of Vals leaving and refusing a return, the writers gave her a poor exit with the freak triumphing and sending her to Barnhurst without much of a struggle. The weak exit did not salute Bea in any way and a decent writer could have easily developed a more classic exit. Pointless killing her off, she could have stayed alive offscreen at Barnhurst. Many actors refuse returns to their iconic roles but then circumstances can eventually make them change their minds!

Val Lehman chose to leave the show and 3 times she was asked back but refused so they killed her off to end the speculation that she would be back. Val had wanted Bea to kill Ferguson when she left but the producers could not afford to lose their top two stars especially as they knew Shelia Florance who played Lizzie was also soon leaving the show.

The 500s seemed like the time when Grundys really made some big mistakes. 1. Pixie's rape and being sent to Ingleside. 2. Killing Bea off. 3. The siege. 4. Killing Myra off. Although, Hazel's suffering during the 390s was hard to watch. While it was only a TV show, that shit was pretty upsetting, not exactly a mistake, but shouldn't have been seen.

As much as people complain about this ending for Bea, it was largely because of Val and the fans. As long as the show still ran, the fans were hopeful for Bea to return and Val said over and over again that she wasn’t interested. Eventually, there was only one way to send a definitive message to the fans that Bea was never going to come back and the Barnhurst 5 was the way to do it. It had to happen. It was an inevitability.

The Barnhurst 5 era wasn't bad, but killing off Bea and Myra within a small number of episodes was what really ruined the Barnhurst 5 era. They should have either killed off Bea and kept Myra in it or killed off Myra and brought back Bea. Nora didn't have what it takes to be Top Dog.

Val was asked back several times to play bea and even after this something along the lines she escaped barnhurst during the riot but val declined rightly so, they knew the show wasn’t much i think once myra was killed off, it went right down hill repeated story lines way comical, hope wentworth isn’t like that!

The last series of the show, about half a season after Myra leaves, is one of the best. I do agree about 20 episodes after Myra's death are a bit bland and the storylines don't really mean much but once they got to the 580's everything started to happen again. Willie and Aunty May had that really interesting undercover storyline, they had the fashion and talent show, Rita Connors came in, the whole Phantom Lager storyline made the show more exciting, then the Lou Kelly riot at episode 600 really made the final year have a nice bang at the start that would continue to re-invent the show with the new lot of characters. I mean we have the euthanasia storyline with Kath Maxwell, Joyce and Mervin get hitched, Lou Kelly is murdered, the boat release scheme, Rita vs Joan for that entire final year was great, Lurch had amazing character development and became one of (if not) the best characters of the show, and lets not forget those Blackmoor Episodes.

Lou was an awesome character. Her stunts got old quickly, the managed Margo really well, as she was always in and out of Wentworth, Lou stayed for almost 200 episodes, pulling stunt after stunt, while all her stunts were always interesting and watchable, they never let her rest and possibly become a likeable prisoner (like they did with Lurch).
