5:58 - "He just started recording over the top of it" - No he didn't. You couldn't record over professionally made cassettes due to a failsafe that was built in to them. On the back edge there were holes that had to be plugged up otherwise the recording function wouldn't activate.

I was so devastated when Bea left. I understand Val Lehman had been telling them she was leaving for a while, and that the negotiations were sour with the new producer who didn’t like her, and the writers were only given 7 weeks to prepare her exit - BUT I still think it was rotten of them not to play the farewell music or give her a better story than a mere transfer - even if they believed the actress would likely be back in the future. However… even though I’ve resisted liking the newer characters… I have to say, Cass has REALLY wormed her way into my cynical heart. Small spoiler if you haven’t watched this particular episode in full - That scene with her wiping the make-up away as she cries, genuinely moved me. A wonderful character and a wonderful actress to pull it off. Very, very likeable. And it makes me happy to feel I am still ‘invested’ in Prisoner… even with Bea and Lizzie having left. Doreen got boring long ago, if she was ever interesting to begin with. It’s nice to have her back but ‘nice’ is as much as it feels.

This is my 8th run-through of the series and each time I get to Bea's departure I feel a little surer that the writers - and Val - had taken the character as far as they possibly could. It's pretty evident that Val is 'demob happy' at the end of her stint and was simply going through the motions in her final dozen or so episodes knowing full well she was offski. With hindsight, Bea's departure was, if anything, overdue and, having departed, it's hard to see how she could have been brought back at any point without essentially rehashing old storylines. I don't want to sound like I wasn't keen on the character - for me, she was far and away the very best top dog of the lot - but what more could they have done with her other than have her and The Freak try to outwit one another ad nauseum? As they say in life - always bow out at the top. She did.

Tbf she was asked back three times , and very nearly came back in 1985 however she wanted more money so they killed her off , off screen. It would have been perfect for her to come back to finish her arch enemy The Freak , as Maggie Kirkpatrick has gone on record saying the show had pretty much run it's course and was going to leave if they show had been renewed after 86.

I still have an original Spectrum from the 1980s but not the original 48K rubber key 'Speccy' but the later Spectrum +2A with built in tape recorder called a "Datacorder" and it still works just as brilliant as it always did i also have loads of cassette games for it as well. However back in Christmas of 1984 i had my very first computer, the original ZX Spectrum which came with loads of games including 'Daley Thomson's Decathlon', 'Frank Bruno's Boxing' and many other great games my Dad and Mum bought it for me as my big Christmas day present of that year (it was second-hand) but was in brilliantl condition and had been carefully look after by it's one and only owner. It came with a Sony tape recorder, joysticks and even came with the complete set of part work magazines 'INPUT' by Marshall Cavendish to program the 'Speccy' as well as all the other 1980s computers that were popular at the time like the Commodore 64, Amstrad, BBC Micro. To this day i still have found memories of that Christmas in 1984!!
